Is Conor McGregor still the UFC's biggest draw, or has his star power finally faded?

Conor McGregor, the biggest-ever superstar in MMA history hasn’t fought for the past three years. And it seems he will not be fighting this year either, as UFC CEO Dana White has confirmed. And Joe Rogan thinks that as time goes on, ‘Mac’s value among the UFC fans will continue to plummet.

“Look, in a perfect world, Conor fights Chandler in December in Vegas. But, meh, he hasn’t fought in a couple of years. Like, is that gonna happen, you know? That’s the problem, if he doesn’t fight in a year from now, its a tough sell. Yes (McGregor can still headline UFC PPV events). You wouldn’t be as excited (for him to fight next year) as you were if Chandler and him fought in July, right?” he said on the UFC 305 Fight Companion Show.

Nevertheless, the UFC commentator also pointed out that while ‘Mac’ pulling out of his UFC 303 clash against Michael Chandler may have hurt him, he was sure the excitement would only rise as a date for a McGregor Fight Week approached. “(But the week of the fight), you’re gonna be wrapped up (in the excitement), and the whole place goes green,” Rogan added.

While Rogan may be predicting a fall in the Irishman’s popularity, such predictions have been made for the past few years, only for them to come to naught. After all, before ‘Mac’ pulled out, UFC 303 had become the highest-grossing gate event in the UFC’s over three-decade history!

This, of course, doesn’t mean that ‘Mac’s popularity has remained unchanged, or hasn’t taken a hit. In fact, along with the long period of inactivity, there are also other, quite serious issues that could combine to dethrone ‘The Notorious’ as the most popular mixed martial artist in the world.

Why Conor McGregor should pay heed to Joe Rogan’s warning

Conor McGregor hasn’t not only fought in three years, his professional career seems to be on a sharp decline. After all, the former two-division concurrent champion has only fought four times in the past six years, losing all but one of those fights. Not to mention the Irishman is 36, which means the clock on his career is ticking rapidly.

Have an interesting take?

Many feel that having become a multi-millionaire and one of the biggest combat sports stars in history, ‘Mac’ has gone soft and simply doesn’t have the motivation and drive that he had when he was on the come-up. However, based solely upon the Dubliner’s statements and recent social media activity, that seems to be far from the case.

McGregor, in fact, has been desperately asking Dana White for a date in December and seems eager to be back in action, seemingly understanding the problem that Joe Rogan has pointed out. Father time, of course, remains undefeated, and while ‘Mac’ is undoubtedly still uber-popular at the moment, this popularity will only get chipped away as time passes. What are your thoughts on Joe Rogan’s take on Conor McGregor’s comeback?
