Can Stipe Miocic still dominate, or is Jon Jones the new king of the octagon?

If Jon Jones versus Stipe Miocic happens at UFC 309, the combat world might go crazy. After all, we have had to wait for so long but also, let us also not get ahead of ourselves. There is no official confirmation and though we know both the fighters would love to finally prove their ultimate dominance in the heavyweight division, we will all have to wait. But Joe Rogan just can’t!

In his recent discussion with Belal Muhammad on JRE, he explored what a fight between Jones and Miocic would look like. With a record of 20 victories and 4 defeats, Stipe Miocic has won the heavyweight title twice. He is also one of the two people to have ever defeated Francis Ngannou in the UFC. So he is going to be a difficult opponent for Jones.

“It’s a great thing if Jon can beat him on his resume, you know. It’s one more notch that Jon beat the most accomplished heavyweight of all time,” Rogan said on the JRE MMA Show #162. But!

He further added, “But here’s the thing: everybody’s sleeping on Stipe. The thing about heavyweights is that they mature later and they can get compromised later, too. George Foreman won the heavyweight title at 45 years old. That was in the natural days, but I was thinking of Evander Holyfield—maybe there’s something going on there. My point is that heavyweight fighters because there’s not as much movement and the body matures differently, they are just bigger human beings. I could see a guy that’s in his 40s still fighting elite.”

Well, Miocic is 42 now and his last fight was in 2021. If this rumored fight does happen, it will be interesting to see how he fights. However, Joe Rogan’s opinions about physically bigger fighters also remind us of Glover Teixeira, who became the light heavyweight champion at age 42.

Then, let us not forget how Randy Couture came out of retirement to win the heavyweight title at age 44. Now the question is: Can Stipe Miocic replicate this against a fighter like ‘Bones’?

Well, that’s what everyone is waiting to see. Jon Jones may be relatively new to heavyweight, but the way he defeated Ciryl Gane via submission reminded everyone why he is considered the best. At the same time, Miocic had done it all in that division and had nothing much left to do until Jon Jones stepped in.

What’s your perspective on:

Can Stipe Miocic still dominate, or is Jon Jones the new king of the octagon?

Amidst all this, let us not forget about Tom Aspinall- the current UFC heavyweight interim champion. And he is impatient. Very impatient.

Tom Aspinall wants to be the undisputed champion, but Jones and Miocic are in his way!

Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic have always been revenue-generating stars for the promotion, and a fight between these heavyweight legends could significantly boost earnings by attracting a substantial fanbase. It must be noted that this fight has the potential to be the fight of the year due to the fact that the fight has been in the making for a year now.

Former UFC flyweight champion, Demetrious Johnson believes that their clash will still sell PPVs even if the title is not involved. While having a conversation with Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson on his ‘JAXXON Podcast’, Demetrious Johnson stated, “Jon Jones vs. Stipe Miocic doesn’t even need to be for a belt. Like, that’s a legend fight, those two fighting. And then, I’m sure Jon Jones is gonna get the exact same fu–ing pay whether he’s champion or not…Me as a fan, I would love to see Jon Jones fight Tom Aspinall. If he doesn’t and he goes, ‘I’m gonna just fight Stipe, he’s a household name’, go ahead, do your thing, Jon.”

Well, whatever it is, Aspinall is not sitting quietly. He wants things to move forward. Now, Jon Jones has been inactive since he won the title because of his pectoral injury. And that’s why the division needed an interim champion in the first place. But now Aspinall’s patience is running thin.

“Get Stipe out of there… The guy is [41-years-old], he’s had a four-year layoff and his last fight was a knockout loss,” Aspinall took some digs last month. He has also shared that he was willing to fight both the heavyweights on the same night. Well, that might not be possible, but it surely puts forth his impatience with Jon Jones and Miocic.
