Back in July, Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced would be moving all his remaining companies to Texas after a public feud with California Gov. Gavin Newsom. A couple of months later, his social media company X found a new home in Bastrop, Texas. He followed the same routine with SpaceX, moving its main office to an existing facility in Texas. And now, Musk is looking to fulfill a plan he first shared in 2021 regarding ‘Starbase.’
What if your workplace became an entire city? That’s what Elon Musk is aiming for as SpaceX employees in Texas might see his vision becoming a reality! Musk’s aerospace company officially requested the incorporation of ‘Starbase’—its site in Boca Chica in Southern Texas—into a standalone city. The move isn’t just paperwork; it’s set to be a leap toward building a self-sufficient hub for rocket innovation and beyond.
“To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley,” Kathryn Lueders, the general manager of Starbase, wrote in a letter to the county,” Kathryn Lueders, the general manager of Starbase, wrote in a letter to the county. Meanwhile, the petition has already found a supporter in Joe Rogan.

Elon Musk shared a tweet highlighting the petition and wrote, “SpaceX HQ will now officially be in the city of Starbase, Texas!” Rogan responded to the tweet, writing, “That’s the dopest city name ever. By a large margin.”
Situated at the edge of the Rio Grande Valley, Starbase has already made headlines as the heart of SpaceX’s boldest projects. This time, it’s about more than launches. Musk’s relocation of SpaceX HQ from California to Texas earlier this year signaled his commitment to the ‘Lone Star State’. Now, with over 3,400 employees at Starbase, SpaceX wants to take things further by formalizing its identity as a city.
Musk also transferred SpaceX’s incorporation from Delaware to Texas earlier this year and in 2021, he relocated to the state, influenced by its Tax policy. In the same year, he also moved Tesla’s headquarters from California to Texas as well but said that California would remain its engineering hub.
This move comes after it was reported that Musk was already working on the Hyperloop Plaza, which he imagines as a work-live community for his employees. The plans for this were set in motion long ago, when he tweeted in 2021 about, “Creating the city of Starbase, Texas.” His petition to turn Starbase into a city also received backing from the Texas Governor.

Republican leader Greg Abbott responded to Musk’s tweet sharing his excitement. “This is excellent. Starbase, Texas. The official HQ for @SpaceX Proud to have you in Texas!” he wrote. But why is Musk moving all of his big ventures to Texas?
One reason was his clash with a Delaware judge over his extraordinary compensation plan with Tesla, which led to the company being moved to Texas and since then he has grown fond of the state. From a business and operations point of view, it makes sense to have all your major companies in the same state. Besides this, Texas’ tax policy which exempts individuals and has fewer corporate regulations can also be seen as the key reason behind his affinity to the state.
Then there was the tussle with California Gov. Gavin Newsom.
California’s defunct Clean Vehicle Rebate Program offered rebates on electric cars as high as $2,500. Newsom’s proposed rebates that could exclude Tesla in an effort to promote more market competition. Musk called the move “insane,” but that happened only last month.
Their feud goes back to July when California passed a law preventing schools from making rules requiring staff to tell anyone, including parents, information about a child’s gender identity. Musk called the law a “last straw” and soon moved SpaceX and X HQs to Texas.
Musk has also faced opposition to his SpaceX program in Texas. Critics argue that the rapid expansion of SpaceX has disrupted the region’s ecosystem, sparking legal battles and environmental concerns. Earlier this year, the group Save RGV accused SpaceX of pollution violations. The company dismissed the claims as frivolous, citing a state review that found no significant risks.
