Joe Rogan once hosted the legendary rapper Ice Cube on his JRE podcast, where the pair had lengthy discussions about the music scene of the early 90s. The million-dollar podcaster spoke to the Hall of Famer in episode 2004 of Joe Rogan Experience. They discussed how hiphop and rap were revolutionary and police often used to send warnings to huge rappers and stars for their lyrics. This same topic again resurfaced in a new episode of JRE where Rogan was giving compliments to Ice Cube on his lyricism.

Rogan always speaks about current affairs, but sometimes he does like to journey back to the past and relive some of the moments from his youth. While speaking to Legion Of Skanks in JRE episode #2205, he traveled back to the time when he used to listen to a lot of rap and decided to compliment, the legendary musician and Hall of Famer.

While speaking to the comedy podcast group the conversation inadvertently went to the 90s and the 80s when things were pretty different than what they are now. They were speaking about the rap scene from the past and started conversing about NWA which was where Ice Cube had started. Ice Cube, whose real name is O’Shea Jackson Sr., was a part of NWA from 1986 to 1989 and recorded their albumStraight Outta Compton along with rappers Easy-E, Dr. Dre, and MC Ren.

However, he left the group and started his solo career after some time. During the late 80s and early 90s, there was a surge in the African-American rap scene against the brutality of the police. This led to communication through music and hip-hop which was characterized by intense rap battles. Mentioning the same the UFC color commentator reminisced about the rebellious days.  He said, “Remember when Ice Cube put out No Vaseline? You do not want to get into one of the rap battles with Ice Cube.”

Dave Smith from Legion of Skanks chimed in, “He was so great for his time in rap, he was incredible.” Rogan admitted that he was an amazing writer and he wrote most of the songs for NWA. The UFC color commentator also had the chance to speak to none other than Ice Cube in episode 2004 from his podcast. They spoke about the rap scene in 1988 and how the world was very different than what it is now. Ice Cube was even sent a letter by the FBI with regards to their Straight Outta Compton’ album!

So clearly music was not just a form of art but a form of protest at that time. However, the rap scene was not the only brutal scene at that time. MMA was also more brutal than it is today, and Joe Rogan shared his own experience with the legendary rapper. On top of that, the rapper also shared his pride for his son who is the next generation progressing the rap scene.

Did you know that it was something similar that forced Rogan to give up practicing martial arts? In episode #2063 of JRE, Rogan confessed to Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, “I started doing kickboxing… And I was realizing I was getting brain damage… I still had these competition aspirations. And then the brain damage thing was scary. And I knew that was coming for me… I knew quite a few people around me that from the time I was 16 till the time I was 21, I saw them deteriorate, like noticeably… And I knew that’s coming for me… And I was like ‘I gotta stop doing this.’”
