It’s Elon Musk’s world, and the rest of us are just trying to keep up. One day, he’s revolutionizing electric cars, the next, he’s casually talking about humanoid robots and self-driving taxis. And now? Apparently, he’s ‘definitely not’ intervening in another staple device, unless, of course, he has to. That’s the latest twist in the Musk saga. The one that had Joe Rogan raising an eyebrow on his podcast when guest Bridget Phetasy insisted that Musk had at least entertained the idea.

“I keep asking him,” Rogan said on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast #2270. “I said, dude, I’ve been seeing all these articles about you making a phone, and he goes, ‘I hope I don’t have to make a phone. It’s very difficult to make a phone.’” But Phetasy wasn’t buying it. “He said he wants to make a phone,” she countered. Rogan shot back instantly, “No, he didn’t.” The debate continued, but one thing was clear, if Elon Musk ever decides to launch a phone, it won’t be because he’s bored. It’ll be because Apple and Google forced his hand.

That’s right. While the billionaire has shut down the rumors of a so-called ‘Tesla Phone,’ he did admit there’s a scenario where he’d make one. If Apple or Google ever started banning apps on their platforms in a way he deemed unfair, Musk said he’d have no choice but to build his own alternative. “It’s not something we want to do unless we have to,” Musk explained, before launching into one of his favorite topics ‘censorship’.

It wouldn’t be the first time Musk and Apple clashed. Back in 2022, Musk claimed that Apple threatened to kick Twitter (now X) off its App Store, though that never actually happened. But now, with X transforming into an all-encompassing media platform, he seems to be keeping the phone option in his back pocket, just in case. And if he did make a phone, you just know it would have some wild, unnecessary features. Neuralink integration? Starlink-powered connectivity? Or who knows, maybe a built-in flamethrower?

Of course, trying to compete with Apple and Google with regard to their cell-phone services might be ill-advised for the tech mogul at this juncture. Why? Well, since he took over Twitter (now X) in October 2022, the value of the social media company diminished by 80%, according to various reports citing major investment firm Fidelity’s observations. Now, with Musk heading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in Donald Trump’s cabinet, a venture such as building a phone to rival companies like Apple and Google may just mount more problems for the tech mogul than he’s already facing.

And credit to the Space-X CEO, Musk insists his plate is full. “Our focus is on making great electric cars, solving autonomy… we’re building humanoid robots, we’ve got large utility-scale battery packs… and solar,” he rattled off. In other words, ‘Tesla Phone-truthers’, it’s not happening, just yet.

What is Joe Rogan’s take on what the tech mogul has be up to?

If Musk isn’t making a phone, what is he up to? Well, as Joe Rogan pointed out, he’s now running DOGE, the Department of Government Efficiency. No, not the meme cryptocurrency, though the acronym is suspiciously on-brand for him.

What’s your perspective on:

Could Musk's clash with Apple and Google redefine the smartphone industry as we know it?

Have an interesting take?

Rogan connected the dots, “Well, also they have to look at it in terms of like what Elon is doing, right? So if Elon has aligned himself clearly in a huge way with the right and now is running DOGE, right? The Department of Government Efficiency. And also has X that he’s turning X into a platform that rivals not just social media platforms but video platforms like YouTube.”

So, the founder, chief engineer and chair of of SpaceX, isn’t just dabbling in government affairs. He’s making serious moves, all while shifting X into a media giant that could challenge the most dominant platforms. Musk himself claims transparency, yet his role in DOGE remains murky. “We are actually trying to be as transparent as possible,” he stated. But with reports of sweeping agency changes and financial disclosures kept under wraps, is that really the case? The billionaire has a track record of making bold promises. Some of which materialize, while others remain in the realm of speculation.

Now, let’s recap. The tech mogul isn’t making a phone, but is revolutionizing nearly every other industry imaginable. And he’s now partially running the government as a “special government employee.” Oh, and the deal with such special employees? Their financial filing is a no-go for the public.

So, what do you think? Is Musk’s world domination plan just getting started? Or is this just another Tuesday in the Elon-verse? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
