Joe Rogan and Khalil Rountree Jr. just gave Conor McGregor a reality check! The 56-year-old UFC color commentator and podcaster sat down with the light heavyweight fighter and spoke about a lot of things inside and outside UFC. The Joe Rogan Experience #161 saw the 34-year-old lethal striker as one of the most dangerous fighters but the conversation was not about him this time. It was about Conor McGregor.
McGregor was seen inside the octagon against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. However, that fight ended disastrously for ‘Mystic Mac’ as he had to get surgery on his injured shin. Since then, he has been awaiting a comeback, but again during UFC 303, he hurt his toe and all plans went to waste. There was nothing else to do for the duo but reminisce about McGregor’s old fights and his prowess when Rogan gave a hard reality check.

Rogan and Rountree were speaking about Eddie Alvarez vs Conor McGregor at UFC 205, where ‘The Notorious’ had won via a KO. The fighter, with a record of 22-6-0, gave a finishing blow to his opponent and won the bout. On top of that, the present highest gate in UFC is this fight that happened eight years ago and had ranked at a reported $17.7 million. This was one of the most historic cards in the promotions as McGregor became the first ever two-division champ in the UFC. Rogan and Rountree were fascinated by the fight video and discussed McGregor’s prowess.
This is when Rogan gave a slight reality check to the lightweight fighter. Speaking on his podcast, he said while looking at one of McGregor’s posts, “Look at that, ‘I’m even smoother now,’ Yeah, I wish that was true.” A fan re-uploaded the UFC 205 winning moment and captioned it, saying that McGregor was very smooth. This comment did not get overlooked by ‘Mystic Mac’ and he commented, “I am even smoother now!” This is when the color commentator remarked that he was not sure if McGregor was smooth still.
Then he said, “But I mean maybe he is, maybe he is and we just need to see him fight again, you know. It’s been a couple of years.” The fighter with a 14-5-0 record agreed and hoped McGregor came back better than ever. Rogan further stated, “I would love to be able to still get the feeling of seeing Conor do amazing sh** you know, and by the way, I fully support him pulling out of that fight the last. Don’t fight with a broken toe.”
So even though they are apprehensive about McGregor’s return, they are still keeping their faith in the star fighter. However, Rogan also stated that boxing against Floyd Mayweather Jr. might have been a bad idea for McGregor.

Joe Rogan exposes the bad decision of Conor McGregor
After suffering from a horrific leg injury and going through surgery, ‘Mystic Mac’ had a two-fight loss steak and was waiting for his return. He was supposed to return at UFC 303 against Michael Chandler, but he hurt his toe and had to withdraw from the fight just a few weeks before! Many believe that McGregor is already past his prime time and is struggling with his fighting form.
Joe Rogan gave some insight on this by stating that this might be because the fighter shifted to boxing in 2017 against Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mcgregor turned out boxing after setting UFC ablaze, which the former Fear Factor host felt was detrimental to his UFC career. Rogan strictly warned Rountree of the consequences of trying boxing.

He said, “Look what it did to Conor. It completely derailed Conor’s career.” The UFC commentator also added that it did help McGregor get richer. He reckoned, “Sure it made him a huge star. I’m sure he would do it all over again if he could do it again. But the reality is you are back to the Conor that beat Eddie Alvarez that the Conor I mean. That Conor was a m*****f****r.”
