Will Joe Rogan's glove redesign finally put an end to the eye poke controversy in the UFC?

In the UFC, certain illegal moves are under the fighters’ control to try and not attempt, like kneeing a grounded opponent or grabbing the fence. But some are just out of their control, or at least in most instances. One of the biggest uncontrollable illegal moves is the eye pokes, and longtime commentator Joe Rogan seems to have an idea to avoid it.

Execs in the UFC have already noticed how frequent eye pokes have become over the years, prompting the decision to make some changes in the gloves. But guess what? Eye pokes still occur from time to time. As such, Joe Rogan has shared his idea of how a glove should be designed and it’s a thought-provoking one, to say the least.

Fingers are the main culprits, aren’t they? That’s where Joe Rogan wants the UFC’s glove makers to put their focus on. When Dana White and Co. introduced new gloves at UFC 302, the new gloves, which attempted to avoid eye pokes, received a wide array of complaints from the fighters. First of all, they pointed out that they were having a grip problem. It was a lot less than they were used to.

Secondly, the gloves’ rigidity led to some serious forearm fatigue during their bouts. However, eye pokes continued to be an occurrence. Hence, Joe Rogan has stepped up with his idea to guest Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson during a recent JRE episode.

Secure the fingers, says Joe Rogan

If we take a look at boxing, the whole idea of the sport is to punch your way to a win, and hence, their gloves are rounded and everything’s covered. That makes eye pokes impossible. However, MMA is a different game altogether. There are takedowns and submissions, so covering the whole hand isn’t feasible. But what Joe Rogan suggests Dana White and the UFC do is cover the fingers, at least, in some capacity.

The UFC gloves, the way they are right now, Why don’t they cover the fingers? Why don’t you have a glove where you have the padding on the knuckle but you have a layer of leather that goes over the finger and goes behind the hand? That way, even if you do have your hands open, you will be running into it like this [palm touching the opponent’s face instead of fingers],” Joe Rogan told ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

The 56-year-old then mentioned the real problem with the eye poke, which is the tips of the fingers. Hence, securing them means lessening the possibility of eye pokes taking place. “I mean covering the tips of the fingers… the problem is the fingertips going into the eyes. Like, every time you see a poke, it’s like one finger going into the eyeball. But if you have it covered up, at least, it would be different, Like, it wouldn’t be one poke going straight through. It’d be a layer… of leather that covers the tip of the fingers,” Joe Rogan added.

There have been multiple design changes to the glove already, and if these eye pokes keep occurring much more frequently, maybe Dana White will give Joe Rogan’s idea a go. Nevertheless, drop your take on this suggestion from the UFC color commentator in the comments.
