There are probably very few personalities in the world of combat sports who understand fighters more than UFC commentator Joe Rogan. The 55-year-old has not only had the opportunity to hold conversations with elite athletes through his hugely successful podcast but also gets in close and personal with fighters during the post-fight interviews. This has given Rogan the ability to look at the athletes and also judge them in their true capacities as a sportsman.
Speaking to Shane Gillis on an episode of JRE, Rogan happened to talk about a certain fighter that he particularly seemed impressed by. Claiming that this fighter was the best guy to interview, Rogan even dubbed him the first guy to figure out the importance of promoting a fight. To the surprise of fans, it was neither UFC superstar Conor McGregor nor anyone from the current crop of fighters.

While discussing his favorite interviews that he has been a part of, the 55-year-old revealed that his all-time personal best was always Chael Sonnen. “Back in the day, Chael Sonnen was the best guy to interview,” Rogan claimed.
Pointing out Sonnen’s skills on the mic, the commentator stated that the 45-year-old was the first to implement pro-wrestling-type promotion in MMA.
“Chael Sonnen would put on a show….he’s a smart dude man and back in the day he was the first guy to really figure out pro wrestling style promotion with like legit fight skills,” he stated.
And fans will also agree with Rogan’s statement. Sonnen’s epic trash-talking always served as an entertaining aspect of the lead-up to his fights back in his heydays in the UFC.
Rogan on Sonnen’s classic fights
It was not just Sonnen’s verbal skills that the UFC commentator was impressed by. Recalling the MMA legend’s fights with Anderson Silva and Nate Marquardt, he pointed out Sonnen’s elite abilities as an athlete too.
“I mean he almost beat Anderson Silva. He almost won that fight. If he didn’t get caught in that triangle in the last round he would have won that fight. And it was a grueling f*****g fight, and he just kept taking Anderson down. And he beat the sh*t out of Nate Marquardt when Nate Marquardt was in his prime.” recalled Rogan.
