Joe Rogan has spoken about the Will Smith-Chris Rock slap saga several times on his podcast. He did so once again in #1826 with a new twist to it. Rogan compared the reaction Smith received to what would happen if an unknown rapper had done the same thing.

Rogan said, “… if someone like Will Smith does something really stupid like smack Chris Rock, it’s not just, he did something stupid, but it’s also, he has lived a life of extreme, like I don’t want to say fortune because he’s super talented.”
“… So for him to do something where we can all go ‘boo, f**k you.’ It’s not just boo, f**k you. It’s also boo, f**k you, and now you’re not going to be as big as you used to be.”

“Now, … I’m not going to support you. Now, I’m not going to go to meet. Now, I’m going to boycott you but like if a rapper, like some unknown rapper, went up and smacked Chris Rock in the face, it’d be, that guy would to be huge,” he said.
“Let’s say, Jada Pinkett breaks up with Will Smith and Jada Pinkett is at the Oscars. And the Will Smith slap never took place. And she’s with some young rapper … and the rapper responds to Chris Rock’s joke by going on stage and smacking. That guy would be huge. He’d be balling out of control.”

Rogan‘s recent comments seem to take both the incidents into account. While Smith received backlash for his actions, the audience member who attacked Chappelle did not get the same reaction, mainly because people had no idea who he was.
Hence, if it were a rapper, he would have probably received some amount of criticism and, perhaps, fame.
