Joe Rogan has comments about every sport. Starting from mixed martial arts to boxing, BJJ, and now karate. The famed podcaster recently talked about the Karate Combat, a full-contact karate league. Although Rogan has previously talked about Karate Combat, this time it was all about the angled edges of the arena. The UFC color commentator and Royce Gracie shared a conversation on the ‘Joe Rogan Experience’ podcast.
Being fans of the fighting world, the duo were bound to talk about various combat sports. However, when they talked about karate, Rogan came up with criticism for the Karate Combat’s angled edges and provided a possible replacement for them.

The JRE host and the BJJ legend sat down for a long talk in episode #156 of the JRE MMA Show. Therein, the former fear factor host stumbled upon the angled edges of the Karate Combat arena. He told Gracie how the league had mats on the edges that were put at an angle. Then Gracie commented that it was indeed an angle that “people cannot climb out” from. Without a doubt, Rogan had the same thought.
The 56-year-old podcaster disclosed the scenario where fighters, when trying to retreat, would simply fall down at those angles, thereby toppling their opponents on top of themselves. He claimed that it was not the best idea the league could have come up with, “I don’t necessarily think that that’s the best idea because as soon as you go up against that, a lot of times guys wind up falling down and the guy just falls on top of them.”
All of that didn’t come without any advice. Rogan continued, “Yeah, you can’t back up. I think it would be better if it was like a basketball court. Just a flat mat and a basketball court, and there’s a warning track. So if you know if you’re in the red zone, you have to get out of that red zone. And if you keep retreating to the red zone, maybe they take a point away from you. Maybe you have to- It’s a lot of room! A basketball court is a big space! It’s a big room. You start in the center and then that’s how you fight.”

While the BJJ fighter agreed with Rogan’s views, it was not the first time that the legendary UFC commentator discussed the Karate combat on his famed podcast.
The JRE host once talked about the origin of Karate Combat
In one of the episodes of the JRE MMA Show last year, Rogan and Bas Rutten discussed the link between Karate Combat and Wall Street. You heard it right! Rutten claimed that the guys from Wall Street started the karate league. He revealed that while the founders of Karate Combat, Michael DePietro and Robert Bryan, initially wanted to start a boxing league, they diverted and thought of getting Olympic-level karate athletes and making them fight a full combat show. Thankfully for the founders, there was no such thing as a full combat karate league previously.

As Rutten narrated the story of Karate Combat’s origin, Rogan was left flabbergasted. He simply had no idea about the connection between Karate Combat and Wall Street. Nevertheless, the league has garnered quite a bit of fame from the martial arts community. And Rogan has now even come up with a revision for the arena.
