Joe Rogan and Sean O’Malley discuss eating disorders due to weight cut

For combat sports athletes it is crucial to maintain weight and stay in shape to fight. This enforces them to engage in extreme diets and work out to maintain weight. Perhaps this leads to eating disorders. For the same reason, Joe Rogan and Sean O’Malley discussed the drawbacks of cutting weight.

O’Malley said, “And I know it’s going to make me take a little bit longer to get back to training or if I am training and I eat, you know, too much cheese and bread. It’s going to cause an inflammation risk, an injury or just be fuc*ing more so than I need to be. But yeah, eating disorder from cutting weight is a real fuc*ing problem.”

To which Joe replied, “It’s a real thing, right?”

The Spotify podcaster recalled that Michael Easter mentioned research done on 36 men who were starved for 6 months. Perhaps this is why the government shut down the program. The research took place to determine what changes take place in the body under severe caloric deficit over a prolonged period.

The results were that once the test subjects started eating again, they ate quite heavily. One of the patients ate almost 11,000 calories in a day for which he had to be hospitalized. This points toward cutting weight severely may lead to eating disorders.
