Joe Rogan slams Whitman's gloves—Is Dana White ignoring a major safety issue in the UFC?

Did Dana White impress Joe Rogan with the new gloves in UFC? There is a lot of drama going around the UFC world with all the different opinions of the new gloves and Joe Rogan is also not far behind with his verdict. He does have some problems with the new gloves and declared his preferred choice in the latest JRE MMA Show #159 episode with Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson.

Rogan continued his conversation about the most important gear in UFC and he still thinks the UFC gloves lack an extremely important detail. Can you guess what it is?

Trevor Wittman is the brains behind UFC champions like Justin Gaethje, Kamaru Usman, and Rose Namajunas. Wittman is also an MMA genius who has created his own MMA gear, especially a pair of gloves that help in preventing eye pokes. Rogan had spoken about Wittman’s gloves before when Sean Brady was on his show and now, he did the same with ‘Rampage’ Jackson. He was speaking about the new gloves and also how eye pokes in UFC need to be reduced.

The UFC color commentator declared that the new UFC gloves are way better than the old gloves. However, he still thought that Wittman’s gloves sat at the topmost on his ranking. Meanwhile, both the new UFC gloves and Wittman’s invention lacked a crucial detail. None of them had leather covers for fingers.

When Jackson asked why UFC did not use Wittman’s model, Rogan said, “No, apparently, Trevor wanted some crazy amount of money for the gloves. Like to sell his design or product or whatever. And he wanted a lot of money apparently and the UFC wasn’t willing to. They were trying to make a deal with him, and I was telling Dana ‘Get his gloves, man they are way better’ and his gloves are curved. They are curved, so your hand sits like this (curled motion) always.”

Wittman’s company is called Onyx and he used to make gloves that make the hand automatically curled up after someone wore the gear. This might have made the eye pokes lesser in the game since the fingers would not be extended. Rogan had tried on Wittman’s gloves once and even showed the evidence to Jackson. The latest UFC fingerless gloves named 3EIGHT and 5EIGHT and are black and golden have been designed in a way that makes the fighter’s fingers more curved. This curve might prevent the incessant eye pokes and even though Rogan has warmed up to the new designs he still has a problem with the fact that the gloves do not cover the fingers. He thinks that covering the fingers will lessen the eye pokes.

Rogan proposes a new design for UFC gloves

He is fine with the curvature of the new gear and told Jackson that the similar design that was imitated from the Wittman gloves was better than the older ones. However, he still insisted that to prevent eye pokes, there needs to be a thick layer of leather covering the fingers while the knuckles are padded with extra cushioning.

Rogan has said this previously as well and sticks to this one point no matter what. He gave his input on the JRE Fight Companion Show. The podcaster said, “These new gloves they ain’t no better than the old gloves. People are still getting poked in the eye… I should say it’s better padding. The best gloves are not made yet. They need to cover the fingers.” He felt that the biggest problem was that the fingers were uncovered which made the eye pokes hurt more.

He had complained that no one listened to him and Dana White did not take his suggestions. However, the new gloves promise more flexibility to the wrists and make it easy for fighters to grapple. Do you think White should add a leather covering for the fingers as Rogan suggested?
