Joe Rogan recently provided an interesting observation about the virtues of discipline and used a Mike Tyson quote to prove his point! The UFC color commentator is known by the fans for his rigorous dedication towards fitness, martial arts, and his many hobbies along with his career. In fact, his commitment to jiu-jitsu has even led him to become a black belt under Eddie Bravo and Jean Jacques Machado in no-gi and gi BJJ, respectively.
As such, during his conversation with MMA and BJJ legend, Royce Gracie, the discussion touched upon the value of cultivating discipline when training. The podcast host brought up Khabib Nurmagomedov and his team as an example of what true focus looks like and even pointed out legendary heavyweight boxer, Mike Tyson’s mindset about why it’s important to do “things that you hate to do”!

In his appearance on the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) MMA Show no. 156, Royce Gracie and Joe Rogan talked about what separates top performers from average athletes. Rogan highlighted that the Dagestani camp of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Islam Makhachev as the perfect representation of focus and commitment to their wrestling skills.
However, Gracie interjected by stating, “I don’t think just because of their wrestling. I think it’s because of their discipline. And I tell a lot of people that those guys don’t think about anything else. Just train.” The legendary UFC 1 winner then also pointed out that, “There’s no the, the girlfriend, or wife. They’re not thinking about any of that! There’s no partying. That’s all they do. Get up, train, sleep, eat, train.”
As the conversation went further, Gracie referenced the Dagestani camp again as he highlighted the fact that they don’t allow holidays, or birthdays, or any other distractions to affect their training structure and that is a key to staying at the top of their game for a long time.

This prompted Rogan to exclaim, “Yeah, you know, Mike Tyson said that. He said, “without discipline, you’re nothing.’ And discipline is doing things that you hate to do but doing them like you love it.”
Rogan’s citation of Mike Tyson’s quote not only shed light on what sets top performers apart but also served as an inspiring reminder of the power of discipline in any pursuit. And with the legendary boxer gearing up to take on Jake Paul in a boxing match soon, the podcast host has also given a word of warning to the social media star turned boxer to be wary of the man who will step into the squared circle against him on July 20!

While the bout between him and Jake Paul has drawn concerns regarding the age difference between the two men, according to Joe Rogan, Paul is making a big “gamble” on which version of Tyson will show up on fight night!

In a recent conversation with Sebastian Maniscalco on the JRE episode no. 2148, Rogan stated, “…just the fact that he’s willing to actually take a chance at Mike Tyson not being able to do what he used to do, ‘cuz that’s what he’s doing the gamble is like, there’s not a chance in hell that Jake Paul would survive against the Mike Tyson that beat Marvis Frazier.”

The fight against Marvis Frazier took place in 1986 and was a one-sided beatdown that ended with Frazier being demolished in the first round. And with Tyson back to training with full intensity in recent social media updates, it remains to be seen if ‘Iron Mike’s legendary discipline and focus will allow him to turn back the clock against ‘The Problem Child’!
