Talks about Staphylococcus infection have taken over the world of mixed martial arts. After suspicions of Islam Makhachev having a Staph infection, Paulo Costa found himself in the crosshairs as the fight fans speculated about him contracting the disease. However, Joe Rogan had previously revealed how to avoid getting infected by Staph.
In a previous episode of the JRE MMA Show, the UFC color commentator and the newly crowned BMF, Max Holloway, had a detailed talk about Staph infections. While Holloway revealed that he had never contracted the disease, Rogan came forward with a big piece of advice to prevent it.

On episode #155 of the JRE MMA Show, Joe Rogan and Holloway discussed the fight between Dustin Poirier and Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299. But the shocker was yet to come. He revealed that Saint-Denis had a Staph infection while he fought Poirier. He asked Holloway if he was ever infected with Staphylococcus. Surprisingly, Holloway came out clean. Maybe that’s the reason why he’s called ‘Blessed’, but the fighter credited his hygiene for that.
The mixed martial artist said, “Yeah, brother, I’m clean, I guess. I guess. Some guys is some dirty mother****ers, I think, you know.” But Rogan knew that getting a Staph infection was pretty easy. All it needed was getting in contact with healthy skin. Holloway, then revealed how some people got infected despite washing up pretty well. He seemingly had no option but to blame it all on luck.
But the JRE host had the perfect weapon in his arsenal against Staph. He talked about the medicated anti-fungal, all-natural, Defense Soap. Rogan said, “Another thing is like, people mistakenly use antibacterial soap. Like you don’t want antibacterial soap. You want to keep your healthy gut flora. I tell everybody, I don’t, I know the guy owns the company, I’ve no affiliations with it, but defense soap. If you’re a grappler, it’s the sh**. Defense soap is all-natural. It’s like tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, and he has all kinds of products. Everything from stuff to clean, like wipes, if you can’t like, get to a shower quick enough. If you’re training in a place that’s kind of dingy and doesn’t have a shower, they have wipes until you get home. They have soaps and ointments…”
Apparently, using this soap could help prevent the onset of Staph infection. With multiple fighters under severe scrutiny for Staph infection, Rogan’s suggestion might just come in handy for the MMA world. But if you think Makhachev and Costa are the only fighters who are suspected of having the infection, you are in for a treat. Let’s find out who else is suspected of being infected.

MMA fighters suspected of Staph infection days before their fight
The first one to come under the public eye for Staph infection was, of course, Islam Makhachev. Conor McGregor took to X and let out a few tweets and attacked the LW champ. But later, Makhachev cleared the air and claimed that he was perfectly fine. Next up was Paulo Costa. ‘Spinning Backfist’ pointed out a spot on the Brazilian’s foot, sending the fight fans into a frenzy of speculations about Staph.
But before the two of them, came the accusations on Khamzat Chimaev. A YouTuber by the name of ‘The Scrap’ speculated that the ‘Chechen Wolf’ was infected with Staphylococcus, because he was seen together with Pat Downey, who was confirmed for being infected. These speculations have indeed put worried caps on the fans, with their fights right around the corner.

A video source discussing the same cited around three weeks for Chimaev to recover from the suspected infection. If true, this could cost him dearly in the fight against Robert Whittaker in Saudi Arabia. The fight could even potentially be scrapped. Maybe Chimaev should take Rogan’s suggestion and use Defense Soap?
