Why are Americans paying more for meds than Germans? Is it time for a change?

As the presidential elections get closer, one question has been at the forefront of the campaign for both candidates, why are Americans paying so much more for medicine compared to other countries? Enter Joe Rogan, who recently found himself discussing this very issue with guest Calley Means on the JRE (Joe Rogan Experience).

What if Donald Trump took the White House again? This is a question that Rogan and Means explored in the JRE episode #2210. As they dove into what a second Trump presidency could look like, they focused on one pressing issue: the enormous cost of medication in America with a staggering $808 billion healthcare industry fueling the debate.

Calley Means, the co-founder of ‘Truemed’, which aims to enable HAS spending on healthy food and supplements didn’t pull any punches when he pointed out the glaring discrepancies in drug prices across the world. He stated, “There’s just simple questions, why are we paying 10 times more for d–gs than Germany, why in the United States, it’s 10 times more expensive to buy Ozempic than in Germany or Scandinavia like there’s these simple, simple things?”

According to a recent report shared on Yahoo Finance, a Wegovy (semaglutide) prescription costs a staggering $1,349 per month in the United States. Comparing it to prices in Germany paints a concerning picture as it costs only $140 dollars while in the UK it comes out to $92.

The problem, Means suggested, is, “…why are we subsidizing the rest of the world and subsidizing the pharmaceutical industrial complex, that could be one stroke of a pen right… One stroke of a pen to reset and say, no price setting, you can charge whatever you want but we’re not going to pay more than Germans. Charge whatever you want.”

While critics argue that lowering prices might hurt pharmaceutical development, Means dismissed that as fearmongering. The real issue, he believes, is fairness. Why should Americans be forced to pay so much more?  But would Donald Trump actually make a difference in his second term for this issue? According to Means, “I think Trump like, he’s talking about this. He’s seen it, so you know to anyone kind of, and I’ve gone through this process, it’s like, we know who he is but we also know that he’s going to put good people in charge…”

Have an interesting take?

Rogan agreed with this take, acknowledging that, “…there is the benefit of him having already been in and understanding all the red tape and all the problems and all the influences, and all the stuff that he couldn’t correct in 4 years.”

Their conversation illustrated the fact that while Donald Trump is a polarizing figure, his experience and willingness to tackle tough issues could bring real benefits. But could we see the former POTUS make an appearance on the JRE to reach Rogan’s massive audience and have a discussion about the same issues?

Rogan receives calls to get Trump on the JRE as he confesses his pressing curiosity

During the episode with Calley and Casey Means, Joe Rogan confessed that he had one question on the top of his list for Donald Trump. The podcast host stated, “If I talk to him, my number one question would be what happens when you get in there? Like what is that experience like?”

While the former POTUS has been making appearances on Logan Paul’s ‘Impaulsive’ podcast, Theo Von’s ‘This Past Weekend’, and Lex Fridman’s podcast, he has yet to show up at the JRE studio. Why is that? In his conversation with Fridman, Trump stated, “But I don’t know about doing his podcast. I guess I’d do it but I haven’t been asked and I’m not asking them. I’m not asking anybody.”

Rogan himself had previously stated to Fridman that he was “not interested in helping him.” But in a recent post on X, the JRE Podcast account shared a video of Trump giving a speech in Pennsylvania which drew a chorus from the fans who stated, “Joe, you live in this country just like we do you, And you know what’s going on, you have to bring him to your show.”

Now, it remains to be seen if Rogan decides to give in to his audience’s demands and invite Trump to the JRE. The latest discussion between Means and Rogan highlighted a critical issue that affects millions of Americans—the staggering cost of medication. But will Donald Trump take the stage on Rogan’s podcast to address these concerns directly? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
