Every story has a protagonist and an antagonist. In the story of the UFC, Dana White is clearly the lead protagonist, supported by his allies. The UFC supremo transformed the organization from a laggard in the entertainment sector into one of the biggest promotions in the world, nothing less than a classic story of the American dream. However, as mentioned earlier every coin has two sides, and in this story, the antagonist is John McCain. Joe Rogan recently had a conversation with legendary UFC fighter Tank Abbot on “JRE MMA Show #158”. The duo indulged in a conversation specific to UFC as Abbot was among the first fighters of the promotion. While in conversation about Abbot’s previous fights and the unfiltered rulebook of UFC back in those days, Rogan deviated from the topic and emphasized that MMA was having a really bad time in the US back in the 90s when boxing was at its peak.

Rogan emphasized that cable TV broadcasting was a tough thing and the emergence of John McCain as the antagonist for the MMA success story was the breaking point for UFC. “John McCain allegedly was doing something for Bud Light. So, he was working with Bud Light, and Bud Light wanted boxing, right? It’s kind of, you know, the whole world was conspiring to keep MMA from flourishing back then,” said Rogan.

He further added, “Absolutely. I mean, it was a really big deal. They would disparage it everywhere.” Well, who is this John McCain? Have you ever heard the term “human co*kfighting” for MMA? It was devised by the then-Republican senator from Arizona, John McCain who made it his life goal to make sure that the sport of MMA does not get the recognition.

John McCain was a blessing in disguise of a devil for UFC

It was back in the 90s when John McCain witnessed his first UFC fight and according to him, it was just a brutal Roman colosseum sport without any honor involved in it. He described it as- “That’s not a sport. That’s a throwback to the Roman Colosseum.” McCain wanted the banish MMA from United States soil but his reluctance to recognize the sport helped UFC to get its early supporters.

A coll͏ective of seas͏oned professionals came together to establish a cohesive set of regulations, which ͏paved͏ the way for MMA to gain official approval in ͏2000. By 2001, the sport received sanctioning in Nevada, a state where Fertitta had previously served on the ath͏letic ͏commission before ultimately acquiring the UFC. In Fertitta’s own words, “If it wasn’t for Senator McCain forcing the issue of regulation in MMA, the sport wouldn’t exist and flourish as it does today.”

McCain’s relationship with UFC softened after it became a multi-million dollar organization. Regardless, he still held to his opinion that the sport was a brutal one till his demise back in 2018. McCain might have been the lead antagonist for the promotion but it has also helped them to get to their position. What are your thoughts on this? State your opinion in the comments below.
