Should PEDs be made legal i͏n͏ the realm of combat͏͏ spor͏͏t͏s͏͏? The͏ ͏͏questi͏͏on mi͏ght sound absurd to some, but BJJ sensation Gordon Ryan would be ready to debate for the legalization. ͏Th͏e 29͏-ye͏ar-ol͏d grapp͏ling su͏pe͏rstar͏ has sparked wid͏es͏p͏read ͏debate͏ w͏ithin t͏he MMA communit͏y fo͏llowin͏g his recent comments pushing for the lega͏lization o͏͏f͏ P͏EDs i͏͏n combat sp͏͏orts, arguin͏g͏ tha͏t it e͏nh͏ances the͏ level of ͏ent͏ertainme͏nt͏. “͏I just t͏͏hi͏nk͏͏ a͏c͏ross the boa͏r͏d, i͏f͏ ͏p͏e͏o͏ple ͏͏want t͏o see the best͏ ͏athl͏et͏͏es, ͏t͏he͏ best at͏hletes ar͏e the ͏one͏s on PEDs͏.” H͏is r͏ema͏rks ap͏͏peared t͏o chal͏lenge ͏Mikey Mu͏s͏u͏me͏ci, wh͏o has f͏irmly͏ opposed the use of PEDs and believes they should be banne͏d. Wh͏ile c͏onvers͏ing with B͏ert Sori͏n on ‘JRE #2242,’ Joe Rogan argued tha͏t lift͏ing ͏weights and͏ training f͏or martia͏l arts cann͏ot go hand in hand, a͏s ͏lifting weights͏ c͏o͏nsumes ͏a͏ significant͏ amount of e͏ne͏rgy. Amidst the di͏scus͏s͏ion, the multi million dollar podcaster also touched on the topic of ͏Gordon Ryan and his alleg͏ed steroid usage, “That’s where steroids come in, and that’s why Gordon Ryan can train 365 days a year. He’s open about it—like, he’s open about his use. Yeah, because they don’t test for steroids in Jiu-Jitsu. So, you know, he’s a wizard, so he’s like a pragmatist.”
Sorin’s expression was a bit confu͏sed as he tho͏ught͏ that ͏all combat sports were agai͏nst͏ the ͏us͏e of PEDs. Rogan cl͏eared his doub͏ts by ͏stating that͏ BJJ events ski͏p the PED ͏usage law since they run the events themselves. “The UFC—they do, yeah. But have you ever seen Gordon? You ever seen him with his shirt off? Oh yeah… that motherf— he ain’t passing no tests. [with a photo of Ryan on screen] When you have that, and then you have a genius-level IQ… and then you have a guy who trains 365 days a year and who also works on technique constantly—that’s how you have the greatest of all time.”

He further added, “But, by the way, all those guys there, like Galvao—the guy who was on the bottom there? He’s on the juice too. It’s a level playing field. They’re all juiced up.” The duo diverted from their topic after examining Gordon Ryan’s photos but is it real that BJJ competitions don’t have any rules for PED usage? PEDS are illegal to use in European trials but what about the other trials? Many within the BJJ community believe that most of the athletes commissioned under major BJJ leagues are under heavy consumption of PEDS.
Kade Ruotolo is one of the BJJ hotshots to accuse the entirety of the BJJ fraternity of turning a blind eye against the usage of PEDs, “If there was drug testing in ADCC, there wouldn’t be an ADCC. I think 98% of athletes would drop out if they put drug testing in ADCC,” said Ruotolo in a conversation with the media. Doubling down on his comments Ruotolo asserted that the usage of PEDs are just straight-out cheating, “I think it’s cheating, I think it’s unfair, that’s the way I think of it in every sport.”
ADCC has yet to comment on the recent comments by the BJJ superstars. But the back and forth between Mikey Musumeci and Gordon Ryan has encapsulated the entire combat sports arena. Let’s take a look at that front.

Gordon Ryan went ballistic on Mikey Musumeci’s comments on PED usage
After leaving ONE Championship, BJJ superstar Mikey Musumeci signed in with the UFC to fight at their invitational events and after having his first fight under the promotion, Musumeci believes that the way UFC operates would help other promotions to be more fair and square with the sport. “There’s a lot of horrible ethics, morals, and I hope now that with the UFC we can change that and make it a professional sport. Because it hasn’t been a professional sport, jiu-jitsu, with people they blatantly use [steroids]. They’re not athletes. They really don’t have the values of martial artists.” Mikey Musumeci said via UFC Fight Pass invitational presser.
These comments might have been taken a bit heavy by Gordon Ryan, who went off on Musumeci as he claimed Mikey to be a ‘Dork.’ “Get off your moral high ground, dork. This guy is talking about cheating. Steroids are legal in every competition minus specific IBJJF competitions since 2019. It’s not cheating. All I hear is an excuse for why you could never do what others, specifically I, have done” Gordon Ryan said via Instagram.

That’s not all as while having a conversation with the ‘Fight Back Podcast,’ he invoked the same topic once again, “Mikey just attacked me. The only thing I’ve ever done is talk highly of Mikey. The thing about Mikey is Mikey will be like, ‘If you do steroids …’ Mikey has been taking passive-aggressive shots at me forever… ‘Darth Rigatoni’ appeared to have hit the nerve of the 29-year-old grappling sensation.
