‘The Joe Rogan Experience‘ has witnessed conversations with some of the biggest names. From the billionaire entrepreneur, Elon Musk, to the music sensation, Kanye West, Rogan has spoken to people leading their respective fields. One more such person he recently had on the JRE podcast was the Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg.
Zuckerberg appeared in episode #1863 and Rogan took the opportunity to grill him regarding Facebook’s content moderation. After all, the topic has been a subject of many debates in the past.

The podcaster wanted to know how the platform discerns problematic content. Zuckerberg was of the opinion that the decision-making process wasn’t clear as black and white. However, it was a trade-off between having ‘bad guys’ and ‘good guys’ on the platform.
Thus, he felt it was a question of which audience was more valuable. He said, “These are values questions. … What do you value more? Those are super tricky questions and part of what I’ve struggled around this is I didn’t get into this to basically judge those things. I got into this to design technology that helps people connect.”
“We have created this oversight board. It’s an independent board with that basically we appointed people whose kind of paramount value is free expression. But they also balance that with things like when is there going to be real harm to others in terms of safety or privacy or other human rights issues.”
“That board, people in our community can appeal cases to when they think that we got it wrong. And that board actually gets to make the final binding decision, not us.”
Joe Rogan and Mark Zuckerberg on the Hunter Biden controversy
Initially, they spoke about Musk’s situation with Twitter. However, the conversation circled back to Twitter and how they have had a different response to political or controversial issues than Facebook.
Speaking about the Hunter Biden laptop controversy, Zuckerberg said, “We took a different path than Twitter… What Twitter did is they said ‘you can’t share this at all’. We didn’t do that. The distribution on Facebook was decreased, but people were still allowed to share.”

He revealed the platform took the help of third-party fact-checking programs to help curb the misinformation. He felt it was a reasonable process to have. Zuckerberg also talked about how they had received a message of caution from the FBI about the same.
Rogan and Zuckerberg on decision making
Joe Rogan spoke about how many social media users have a strong stance on certain issues. He thus wanted to know how Facebook deals with it.

Zuckerberg was of the opinion that there needs to be a balance and decision-making shouldn’t be too centralized. He once again touched upon the ‘Hunter Biden laptop’ controversy and said that he didn’t want Facebook to be deciding whether it was true or false. As a result, Facebook took the help of third-party organizations.
Additionally, he felt the US was more polarized on issues than other countries.
