Joe Rogan has stood strong in his belief that the Ultimate Fighting Championship required some major changes. The 57-year-old podcaster has compared the UFC with other fight promotions and ranted about changing certain aspects like removing the cage and letting the contenders fight in an arena that resembled a basketball court. But those changes brought in a bit of trouble for the beloved UFC color commentator.
While the entire world loves to listen to Rogan speak his heart out in his podcast, and during his commentary sessions, Dana White didn’t really heed the JRE host’s advice for change. And the podcaster knew pretty well that it was all because his ideas seemed a bit ‘crazy’.
Talking about it on episode #164 of the JRE MMA Show, Rogan told Israel Adesanya, “The UFC doesn’t listen to me ‘cause I have all kinds of crazy ideas. I’m like get rid of weight cutting, add more weight classes, change the gloves, change no-standups.” ‘The last Stylebender’ seemed to believe that it was indeed “Fair enough.”

The UFC color commentator went on to justify his take. Joe Rogan revealed that all he wanted to see in a fight was two fighters competing without any hindrance. According to the JRE host, techniques and skills took precedence over rules. He continued, “Because also like, I’m not interested in making the fight more exciting. I’m making, I want, I’m interested in what’s the best. What actually words. I’m a purist. I want to see what is the actual effective technique…”

Not too long ago, in a conversation with Khalil Rountree Jr., Rogan disclosed that the UFC should have more weight classes, with a new division every 10 pounds. He pulled in an example from the realm of the squared rings, and said, “Look at boxing. There’s a reason why there’s a 147 and a 154 and a 160. It’s because there is really a difference legitimate in their prime 154 and a 160.”
On top of that, Rogan would also change the iconic MMA gloves, and extend the padding to ensure that the fingertips are also covered. In a previous JRE episode, the podcaster said, “Why are the fingertips open they don’t have to be open. All you need is the same UFC gloves right now and extend the lever like a mitten over the fingertips of the front fingers and pull it back in.” He claimed that this change would not hamper grappling in any way.

Another change that the JRE host wanted to bring in was to remove the MMA cage. The fence acted as a hurdle for many fights, that prevented takedowns and submissions. Fighters who got backed up against the fence can rely on the cage to bounce back into the action and avoid being taken down. Instead, Rogan opted for the fights to take place at the center of a basketball court. It would have markers that would warn the fighters if they tend to go out of the safe zone, without any interference from the referee.
