Joe Rogan has been doing his UFC gig for almost three decades now, but even he’s susceptible to mistakes. Yes, the 57-year-old has made his fair share of mistakes live on air. This is part and parcel of the work Rogan does, and it can happen to anybody. However, the longtime UFC color commentator recently mentioned one mistake that he heavily regrets, involving bantamweight contender, Umar Nurmagomedov.

At UFC 272, Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s cousin took on Brian Kelleher, registering a convincing submission win in the very first round. It was his second win in the UFC, following which he had a chat with Joe Rogan in the post-fight interview. But as soon as the longtime commentator reached the end of the interview, Rogan fumbled Umar Nurmagomedov’s name and mispronounced it.

“I butchered his name one time so bad. So bad. It couldn’t get out of my mouth,” Joe Rogan told Belal Muhammad on the recent ‘JRE MMA Show’. “Like sometimes my mouth just don’t work right, and that’s fine if you’re doing a podcast… But if you’re like saying, ‘Guys, [speaks gibberish],’ F***, like ‘What did I say?'”

It was a mistake that Joe Rogan regrets. He never thought he’d slip up calling Umar Nurmagomedov, someone for whom he has a lot of respect. Nevertheless, he maintained that the undefeated star is one of the most credible contenders in the bantamweight division. “I felt so bad because I really love the guy. I think he’s awesome and especially after the Sandhagen fight, I think he’s the most compelling contender in that division after Merab,” Rogan added.

Umar Nurmagomedov is on a similar trajectory to that of Khabib, but the UFC commentator believes that one aspect of the bantamweight star might just be better than ‘The Eagle’s.

Joe Rogan's goof-up on Umar's name—proof that even pros have their off days, right?

Have an interesting take?

Joe Rogan had already deemed Islam Makhachev as more of a complete fighter than Khabib Nurmagomedov after his UFC 302 win. Similarly, the 57-year-old also views Umar in a similar light. He believes that the bantamweight star’s stand-up game is vastly better than ‘The Eagle’, who mostly specializes in making use of his top-notch ground game.

“The difference between Umar and Khabib is Umar’s stand-up is so dynamic. His kicking is so dynamic, it’s so dangerous and quick. He throws head kicks off the front leg with speed; he throws things that are lighting-fast,” Joe Rogan further stated. While fans might put this statement up for debate, even Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz has hailed Umar for having an edge over his Hall of Famer cousin.

“Nobody in the top 15 can beat Umar, he is better than all of them. He’s better than Islam, better than Khabib, better than all of them. Umar I believe is better than all of them,” Ali Abdelaziz told MMA journalist Kevin Iole.
