During the #2071 JRE episode, Joe Rogan’s producer Jamie Vernon pulled up an article that provided statistical data regarding the shark attack in the country. There, he mentioned how the possibility of getting hit by lightning is almost seven times more than getting bit by a shark. Rogan appeared to agree with that statement.
“That makes sense [getting hit by lightning more than getting bit by a shark],” said the 56-year-old. Jamie Vernon then mentioned that there are a few incidents where sharks attack people without any form of provocation. He said, “In 2022, there were 57 unprovoked shark attacks.”
After hearing about unprovoked attacks, Joe Rogan wondered how people provoke sharks that lead to fatal consequences. He asked, “What is a provoked shark attack?” Kim Congdon then explained that question by claiming that people who go fishing for sharks often end up getting bit. “[Provoked attacks can be] probably fishing for a shark. You’re trying to catch it and it bites you.”
Joe Rogan then proceeded to read the data, which stated that before 2022, fatal shark attacks resulted in almost 5 to 6 deaths every year. He further stated, “[There were] 70 unprovoked shark attacks annually, leading to between 5 and 6 deaths per year.”
The data mentioned that the possibility of death by shark attacks is very low, but it can happen to anyone. “While the risk is certainly there, it’s relatively small,” Rogan added. Now, let us take a look at the statistics of shark attacks state by state.
Miami is the hotspot for the most shark attacks in the US
Joe Rogan and his guests took a look at the places where shark attacks were more frequent. At the top sat the state of Miami. The East Coast state has been the shark bite capital of the world, according to ‘Floridapanhandle.com‘. After Florida, the second place goes to New York, which was home to 8 attacks in 2022, according to ‘Fieldandstream.com‘.

The state of Hawaii is also not far behind New York, as it recorded five attacks with one death in 2022, followed by California with four attacks. Meanwhile, the lowest number of shark attacks last year was seen in Alabama and Texas, with one attack each. We can surely say that the USA is one of the biggest hotspots of shark attacks, even though they’ve recorded a few deaths.

According to data, sharks often feed on many kinds of seafood. As such, they do not see humans as their food. Rather, their attacks are a result of confusion and curiosity, and sometimes they also happen because of mistaken identity. They often bite someone out of curiosity to test if they are the target. But if they aren’t the target, the sharks tend to release them.
