Leon Edwards demonstrated why he is the welterweight champion against Colby Covington at UFC 296! The buildup to the event was marked by Covington making questionable comments about Edward’s father and his tragic death. ‘Chaos’ had even claimed that he would finish ‘Rocky’ in their fight but his performance didn’t align with his words as Edwards claimed a decisive victory instead.

However, according to Joe Rogan, Edwards chose to prove a point in the fight instead of imposing his game plan. Rogan revealed in the post-event show that he felt Edwards did not make the “best choices” during the fight. However, his perspective has been slammed by fans who feel like the UFC color commentator is wrong about his analysis of Edward’s performance. Let’s take a look at how the community reacted!

The fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington highlighted Edward’s impeccable control of distance and his well-rounded MMA game. ‘Rocky’ even chose to engage in grappling exchanges with the wrestler, Covington, and also tried to submit him.

However, Joe Rogan, in a statement during the post-event broadcast stated, “Most certainly the better man, most certainly the better fighter but what was interesting is that he made choices tonight that were not the best choices to win the fight but to almost like to prove a point…”. But his take on the fight hasn’t resonated with the fans as they were quick to point out in the comments that Rogan was wrong in his assessment!

Fans claimed that Rogan is “out of his mind”

Joe is outta his mind. He knows he would’ve done the same thing if someone talked s*** about his mom.

Others pointed out that Edwards’s grappling skills outclassed Covington’s.

Rogans making a big deal about Leon showing the world he can grapple? N what could have been.  Colby was terrified the whole fight.

Some claimed Rogan was biased in his assessment.

Joe is yapping, he did dominate the fight and Leon out wrestling him messes up Colby’s stock even further. It was a truly embarrassing week for Colby and Leon put the nail in the coffin.

 I would argue it was the least ego based decision. He wanted to develop as a rounded martial artist by testing his weak points. Sticking to his A game would be the ego based decision

But despite Rogan’s take on his performance, Leon Edwards was pleased with the skills he showcased and is even ready to change his name to reflect his wrestling skills! 

‘Rocky’ may change his name and look soon

Leon Edwards showcased dominance in his victory over Colby Covington at UFC 296, surprising many with his superior skills in striking and grappling. Covington failed to engage effectively, allowing Edwards to pick him apart at range. Even in close-quarters grappling, Edwards outperformed Covington.

As such, during a post-fight interview with TNT Sports, Edwards stated, “…two of the best wrestlers in the division. I’m able to out grapple them, take them down, I think it shows my growth as an athlete and as a mixed martial artist so long may it reign.  Let’s go! I might just cut my mustache off and just have a beard, Leon Magomedov”

His triumph signals a significant evolution in his mixed martial arts prowess. The fighter also jokingly hinted at a rebranded identity, proposing the name “Leon Magomedov” with a beard referencing the dominance of Dagestani fighters like Khabib Nurmagomedov
