Is Llontop's refusal to change his FFC tattoo a sign of loyalty or stubbornness?

The UFC has no shortage of inkheads like Dustin Poirier and Sean O’Malley, whose body is filled with tattoos. However, UFC lightweight James Llontop, despite having way fewer tattoos than many of his UFC peers, still stands out among them. The reason for this is the multiple tattoos he has on his face as well as a unique tattoo on his neck.

Since he is a relative newcomer to the UFC, having joined the promotion last year, not much is known about him. But his tattoos could help us understand the type of fighter and indeed the man ‘Goku’ sees himself as. This is why in this article, we take a look at his tattoos in depth.

What is tattooed on James Llontop’s face?

James Llontop’s most visible and striking tattoos are on his face. And one of those tattoos is a doozy. On his left cheek, the Peruvian has a Uzi handgun. In sharp contrast, Llontop proudly dawns a small cross tattoo on his right cheek.

This tattoo undoubtedly is a visual representation of his Christian faith. He also has a word tattooed on his right temple, done in a beautiful, narrow cursive font. What exactly that particular tattoo says, however, is not clear since that tattoo is not totally legible.

Another very visible tattoo ‘Goku’ has is on his throat, which simply says ‘FFC’. This, of course, stands for the Final Fight Championship, a Las Vegas-based MMA promotion, that was the Peruvian’s home, and where he went 10-0 and became champion before joining the UFC in 2023.

The reason Llontop earned his UFC contract, of course, is because of his victory at Dana White’s Contender Series 62 last year. After it was confirmed that ‘Goku’ was getting a spot on the UFC roster, head honcho Dana White would joke that the Peruvian better change the FFC tattoo to a UFC one. However, ‘Goku’ immediately shot down the idea, simply because of how much his stint at the FFC meant to him.

“No, it’s impossible because this marks a moment in my life of a before and after of my career. I’m very grateful to them (FFC), so I wouldn’t change it. I’m not thinking of any new tattoos. Not for now, but I haven’t really thought about it yet,” he told reporters at the post-DWCS 62 press conference. Now let us look at the rest of his tattoos.

Other tattoos on James Llontop’s body

Another remarkable tattoo that Llontop has is a lion’s face on the left side of his chest. Lion, of course, represents courage, strength, and ferocity. It undoubtedly is another representation of the type of fighter he sees himself to be. On the right side of his rib cage and torso, the Peruvian has a vertical tattoo spelling out his first name, ‘Llontop’ done in beautiful Helvetica font.

His left arm has a tattoo that is a homage to his nickname ‘Goku’, who is the protagonist of the cult-hit anime, Dragon Ball Z. Starting from his left wrist and going all the way up to his left bicep is a tattoo of Shenron, the titular dragon of the series, with his mouth opened and fangs bared.

His right bicep, on the other hand, has an open palm Middle Eastern symbol, called ‘Hamsa hands’, which represents protection, power, and strength. The palm itself has a yin-yang symbol, in the middle of it, which represents a balance between opposing forces. As his next challenge approaches at UFC 309 in the form of Mauricio Ruffy, will ‘Goku’ be able to project his inner ‘Kamehameha’ to come out on top?
