Will Adesanya's need to win for his mother fuel his performance against Du Plessis?

UFC 305 pre-fight press conference witnessed some of the most heated moments in the rivalry between Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis. The duo have been at each other’s throats for a long time now. But Du Plessis made the mistake of touching a sensitive nerve in Adesanya’s mind at the press conference. Needless to say, the former champion lashed out at the South African champ. But the fighting community didn’t expect Adesanya to shed tears while talking about it.

Following the events of the press conference, Chael Sonnen claimed that Adesanya couldn’t lose the battle against Du Plessis. But why does he think so?

When ‘Stillknocks’ attacked his childhood story at the UFC 305 press conference, Adesanya took it personally when cried out in public while promising to show Du Plessis his power in the Octagon. Adesanya simply didn’t like it when Du Plessis claimed that he had a rich life when in reality, the former champ and his father faced quite a bit of struggle when his mother was studying to become a nurse. But ‘The American Gangster’ has come up with a prediction that can boost the Nigerian’s morale.

Taking to his talk show, ‘The Bad Guy’ broke down the fighting prowess of the middleweight champion and the challenger. While he predicted that it was a fight between a grappler and a striker, the outcome didn’t seem to go in favor of the grappler this time. Sonnen claimed that Du Plessis wouldn’t be able to dominate with his grappling since Adesanya was someone who survived against a celebrated grappler, Yoel Romero. The fight has become pretty personal for ‘Stylebender’, and Sonnen believed that it was reason enough to trust in Adesanya’s win.

Sonnen said, “They’re fighting over something extremely personal. It would seem to me the pressure is on Izzy. It would seem to me that Izzy needs to win. That’s the biggest thing I think Izzy has in his favor. I have not seen Adesanya in an environment where it was personal, where he didn’t shine. You’ve come to Uncle Chael to put the curse on somebody. I believe Israel Adesanya wins this fight and reclaims the middleweight championship of the world.”

Of course, this is not the first time ‘The American Gangster’ sided with Adesanya. A few days before the date of the showdown, the former UFC contender announced what made Adesanya a better fighter.

Uncle Chael points out ‘Stylebender’s strength that will lead him to victory at UFC 305

Adesanya has fought many grapplers and survived. Be it Kelvin Gastelum, Derek Brunson, or Romero, ‘The Last Stylebender’ has shown great finesse in defending himself against grapplers. It was indeed noteworthy, that DDP has pretty good skills in the realm of grappling. However, Sonnen didn’t agree with Du Plessis being able to take Adesanya down.

Sonnen said, “I don’t believe he can take Izzy down easier than Gastelum, easier than Yoel Romero, easier than Brunson. I think he’s going to have to fight and Dricus goes straight for it and he wears guys down. He makes them quit. And that’s the one thing about Izzy I cannot say, no matter how bad of a performance I’ve seen from him, I’ve never seen that man quit.”
