‘Big’ John McCarthy and Josh ‘Punk’ Thomson made their predictions about a possible fight between UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis, which seems inevitable in the near future after their hostile face-off at UFC 290.
The legendary referee, who helped draft the Unified Rules of the MMA, was joined by his co-host and former UFC fighter Josh Thomson on their Weighing In podcast to discuss their pick.

Calling Adesanya ‘a sniper’, Big John warned that he would pick DDP apart. “I look at it is he’s (Adesanya’s) a sniper, okay. He’s the guy who will sit there and just pick you apart.” Big John believes that Izzy could counter DDP from the outside, taking advantage of his length.
“Izzy’s got to stay there in the outside and just pick him apart be the sniper and just keep on hitting him and don’t think about worrying about the Knockout…Izzy is the taller, longer fighter.” Big John told Thomson.
According to McCarthy, Stylebender should concentrate on taking down the South African through an accumulation of strikes instead of going for the Knockout. “Keep touching him (and) touching him until he falls down and eventually” he said. Big John believes the Kiwi-Nigerian to be “the better technician” and picked him as “the favorite in the fight”.
Josh Thomson agreed and picked Adesanya over DDP, as he couldn’t see a way for Du Plessis to beat Adesanya. “Yeah I just I don’t know how he gets it done…he’s not a smooth striker,” Thomson said.
Big John and Thomson clearly think Adesanya will be the favorite, owing to his length and superior technical abilities. But why do Izzy and DDP have so much hostility toward each other?
The feud between Israel Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis
The feud between Izzy and DDP goes back to comments the latter made on UFC media day questioning whether the UFC championship belts won by Kamaru Usman, Francis Ngannou, and Israel Adesanya ever went to Africa.
“Did those belts ever go to Africa? As far as I know, they came to America and New Zealand. I’m going to take a belt to Africa. I’m the African fighting in the UFC.”

Izzy blasted the South African and called him “a product of colonization”. Even though the South African later clarified that he never claimed to be “more African” than them, he reiterated that he, unlike the three champions of African origin, actually lives in Africa.
