MMA may be known as the sport of blood and injuries. But the toll that this sport takes doesn’t always stay limited to the body. There are a number of MMA athletes who have suffered from mental health issues amidst and after their careers in the sport. MMA fighters are at risk of sustaining traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which can lead to mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and a lot more.
But as we all may agree, it’s important to speak out if somebody is going through mental health issues, which a lot of us don’t. But the noted UFC featherweight champ, Alexander Volkanovski, broke those barriers and spoke out about his mental health after his devastating defeat at UFC 294. However, ESPN reporter Marc Raimondi later caught up with the noted BMF of the UFC, Justin Gaethje, and asked for his take on ‘Volk’s’ words.

The BMF of the UFC’s words, “The older we get, less of our bodies allow us to do that” during his interview implies that he was sighting ‘Volk’s’ increasing age as a major reason for his mental unwellness. ‘Volk’ is currently 35 years old, which is a year more than ‘The Highlight’s’ age. In his post-UFC 294 press conference, ‘The Great’ also laid stress on how he doesn’t “do well” when he isn’t kept busy. This issue might arise from ‘Volk’s’ feeling that he needs to make the most of the days left in his career.
He implied that getting up after a setback was a rather tough task in which most individuals are all alone. Gaethje also said, “Nobody’s going to hold you accountable and nobody’s going to make sure that you’re not doing those things other than you. And every time you do that, you have to look yourself in the mirror and understand that you’re making a mistake. The hill that you’re gonna have to climb is a little bit steeper now.”
‘Volk’ had to compromise his undefeated UFC record after his loss against Islam Makhachev at UFC 284. Maybe that grief overcomes him while he sits without anything to do. This also might be the reason why he wants to keep himself busy. Also, much like Gaethje’s case, he may be worried about the fact that he doesn’t have many more days left in the sport.
Justin Gaethje revealed that he didn’t have any issues like Alexander Volkanovski
But Gaethje also revealed that he didn’t share any of Volkanovski’s issues except one. The Highlight said, “I don’t know, but I love what I do. I’ve never had any mental health issues other than wanting to fight”. Well, most UFC fans may know that there’s no fixed time interval between two fights of a UFC fighter. A lot of UFC athletes have to wait for prolonged spans of time before getting their next fight.

Gaethje’s sole mental health issue may be related to this. In his own words, we can assume that he probably gets restless when he doesn’t receive any confirmation about his next fight for a long time.
Well, whatever the reason may be, it’s quite understandable that the fans of ‘Volk’ and Gaethje never want to watch them depressed. Especially ‘Volk’s’ followers will want their beloved star to return to mental normalcy once again so that he can make a stronger comeback like the champion he is.
