UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has been on cloud nine since redeeming himself against Alex Pereira at UFC 287. For the first time in their long rivalry, Adesanya slayed the giant when he knocked him out clean in Miami to reclaim the UFC middleweight title. Further, ‘Stylebender’ delivered one of the most iconic post-fight speeches in UFC history that night and the joy of victory was evident in his words and his voice.
Recently, Adesanya revealed that his speech was improvised and it came to him at the moment. However, there was one thing about that night that Adesanya had been planning for. In fact, he had been planning it for months, but the perfect moment came only at UFC 287.
Israel Adesanya recently appeared on the ‘Flagrant’ podcast featuring comedian Andrew Schulz. ‘Stylebender’ and his hosts started off their chat discussing his iconic win over Pereira and his post-fight speech. During that chat, the 33-year-old revealed an intriguing little detail about that historic night.

According to Adesanya, he had to request referee Dan Miragliotta for permission to do the iconic archer celebration in the cage. Adesanya posing over Pereira’s body post the knockout is one of the most memorable moments of the night and that happened thanks to veteran referee Dan Miragliotta.
Israel Adesanya recalls asking the referee for permission before UFC 287
Talking to Andrew Schulz, Israel Adesanya admitted that the celebration with shooting arrows had been planned in advance. ‘Izzy’ credited the idea to his interest in dancing, which allows him to come up with similar instances.
He said, “I remember telling the referee… I just remember “bro, if and when I sleep this dude I just need you to let me have my moment. I won’t touch him.’ I told Dan [Miragliotta]. I was like ‘Let me have my moment.”
The City kickboxing star continued, “I was like ‘if and when I sleep him, just let me have my moment because I’ve been waiting how many years. I said it last time in New York as well but it wasn’t my moment then.”

The 33-year-old added, “That was his moment. Great story for him. But I was like ‘let me have my moment just because… I won’t touch him, I won’t hurt him, he’ll be dead, but just let me have my moment because I’ve been waiting so long to soak this up.”
Adesanya’s statement proves how much he wanted to get one over Pereira. Despite being 3-0 down to the Brazilin before UFC 287, the Kiwi kept his resolve and manifested the win in their fourth fight.
