Fight fans love the UFC because it is a gruesome sport where anything goes. Fighters like Nate Diaz, Jon Jones, Conor McGregor, etc. bleed in the ring to ensure that the fans have a good show. However, it is also important for the fighters to win their bout against their opponents and sometimes, those fights can be less ‘gory’.
At UFC Nashville on 5 August, Bantamweight fighters Cory Sandhagen and Rob Font stepped into the UFC Octagon for a fight. The fans were thrilled as always but the fight didn’t go as they had expected. In a recent post-fight interview, the reason behind that was disclosed by the winner of the fight – Cory Sandhagen.

Every fighter should adopt a strategy before entering the ring with their opponents. As for Rob Font, he had a ‘gaping hole’ in his game that was easily spotted and taken advantage of at the main event.
However, since the fight was mostly on the ground, the fans didn’t see the fast-paced, high-octane action that they were hoping for and ended up bashing Sandhagen for a ‘slow’ win. However, recent updates confirm that Sandhagen had suffered an injury, early in the fight and had to adopt the strategy to ensure a win for himself. In a recent interview, he divulged the details of what exactly went down.
“45-50, the number 7 guy in the world who has been, you know, in the UFC for 8 or 9 years now, so… not upset about it, man. Rob Font has a giant hole in his game where he doesn’t defend shots well and he doesn’t get up well. If I can win that way, I will – a 100% of the time.“, started Sandhagen, talking about his fight against Font and the loopholes in his game.
Sandhagen was seen wearing a sling on his right arm, pointing to the fact that he had, in fact, been injured during the fight. Addressing that, one of the interviewers asked him about the injury he suffered and whether he suffered that in the first round itself or not. Sandhagen spilled the beans.
“That’s what the doctor’s saying. Uh… Yeah, something happened to my elbow in the first round. I’ve been having like, just elbow issues for like the last couple of months, but something happened, I was like ehh… that could be sketchy.“, said Sandhagen. “And then round two-round three it started to get a little worse and I was like… you know I’m not gonna play with this guy. I’m gonna take him down every single time.“, he added.
Elucidating his in-game strategy, a worried Sandhagen said, “That was the plan anyways, but it really became the plan when this started, you know, nagging me and it’s like real radiating now, so… I hope it’s not too messed up cause I wanna… you know, get back in there soon.“
What went down at UFC Fight Night – Cory Sandhangen vs. Rob Font
The fight between Sandhagen and Font was made at Catchweight and although the fans were expecting a bloodbath, it actually turned out to be a technically sound match. The original fight card featured a fight between Sandhagen and Umar Nurmagomedov. However, that fight was scratched and Font was brought in as a replacement fighter.

Right off the bat, Sandhagen’s approach to the game was wrestling-forward, with the fighter taking Font down to the ground in each round and making sure he keeps him there. The crowd wasn’t too pleased with this mode of combat and started booing Sandhagen in the middle of the fight. UFC President Dana White walked away at round 4.
