Daniel Cormier has some pretty serious insight about the time ‘Suga‘ won his title. On his own YouTube channel, Cormier uploaded a video where he discussed Aljamain Sterling‘s recent callouts towards Sean O’Malley. The former UFC fighter and veteran caster knows what he’s talking about especially because he’s in the background.

He’s heard things from places and knows people in the business. If Cormier is to be believed, ‘Aljo’ shouldn’t have fought so soon after defending his title against Henry Cejudo. However, the fighter made a decision that can be considered rushed. Why? Here’s Cormier’s take on the whole situation.

When Aljamain Sterling fought to defend against Yan, he felt like he should take a little break. However, once things had cooled down a little, fans found out that the ‘Funk Master’ would be back sooner. However, to Cormier, the whole ordeal was no surprise. Years of experience led him to predicting the outcome.

“I recall when he won or defended his title for the first time in Jacksonville, he said right away I’m gonna take some time off,” said Cormier in his video. “And Ryan Clark and I were talking about this on our show and I said ‘Ryan he’ll be back sooner than he’s saying’. I go ‘because they’re gonna back the truck up to him and they’re gonna pay him and when they pay him he’s gonna say ‘okay I want to fight’.”

Certainly, the idea of making more money can feel lucrative to anyone. But was it smart of Sterling to pounce when he wasn’t ready? Many fans suspect that not taking enough time out of the cage ultimately caused his fall. Even Cormier felt that he came back way too fast. Even for himself.

“. . . We saw Aljo in April or May in Newark. Right? It was much faster than he originally anticipated. I said immediately, ‘this dude’s gonna get active, he’s going to be very very active. He’s going to be put to work more often than most Champions.”

Was ‘Aljo’ pushed into competing more or did he do it for the riches? Either way, he fought Henry Cejudo and then two months later, he fought O’Malley. This is where he lost his title. The whole idea of Cormier talking it out started because of Sterling’s callouts towards ‘Suga’ to put the belt back on the line. Perhaps the current champion isn’t up for it yet.

Cormier talks about Sterling’s callouts

Daniel Cormier started speaking about it after acknowledging Sterling’s callouts. After the fight, Sterling had maintained that a rematch is what he would “like the most”. On top of that, he also asked ‘Suga’ to call out Merab Dvalishvili. Here’s what Cormier had to say about that.

“He goes fight me and give me my rematch or fight Merab. Do what I did,” said Cormier. “Here’s the issue Aljo, it’s not the same.”

Only because Sterling quickly took on one contender after the other doesn’t mean everyone has to. Fighting twice a year can prove devastating, as we have already seen. Keeping the title to himself for at least six months would be a vice decision for Sean O’Malley.

Thankfully, it looks like he knows that quite well. While Dana White and Co. may have persuaded Sterling to fight more often, it doesn’t look like the same effect will work on ‘Suga’. Do you think he should put the title on the line? Let us know in the comments.
