Who do you believe—Joe Rogan or Art Davie—about the real story behind Rogan's UFC hiring?

UFC podcaster and commentator Joe Rogan recently gained attention for praising presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, which sparked a reaction from Donald Trump and his supporters. Rogan later cleared his position and moved on, but he is now embroiled in political controversy once again. This time, UFC co-creator Campbell McLaren has expressed dissatisfaction with Rogan’s claim and is questioning his mental acuity.

In his latest X post, Campbell McLaren reminded Joe Rogan, who these days seems so engrossed in his friendship with Dana White, that Rogan’s claims of being hired by White are not accurate. McLaren dismissed Rogan’s repeated assertions that the UFC CEO was responsible for hiring, stating, ” I sincerely wonder if, like Biden, @joerogan is having memory lapses. Joe seems to have forgotten it was me, not Dana White, that hired him.”

The co-creator also refuted Rogan’s claim that Dana White set the fight between Blade actor Wesley Snipes and Rogan, stating, “And it was me who was putting together the Wesley Snipes fight. Joe?”

For those unaware, Wesley Snipes, on the advice of then-UFC official Campbell McLaren, challenged Joe Rogan to an MMA bout while struggling with financial and legal troubles because of financial mismanagement between 2001 and 2006. Snipes aimed to earn money through an MMA fight to alleviate his financial burden.

However, before the fight could materialize, Snipes was sentenced to three years in prison from 2019 to 2013, though his term was reduced after he settled his financial issues. Despite his return from confinement, neither the UFC nor Joe Rogan ever broached the subject of the proposed fight.

Nevertheless, this is not the first time Campbell McLaren has tried to get Joe Rogan’s attention. In the past, he attempted to draw Rogan’s interest in hiring him as a commentator for his MMA promotion, Combate Global.

McLaren’s search for a new commentator

Campbell McLaren, often hailed as the “father of the UFC,” drew inspiration from the video game “Mortal Kombat” to create the Ultimate Fighting Championship. The first UFC event, held on November 12, 1993, marked a pivotal moment that propelled both McLaren and the UFC into the spotlight. After parting ways with the UFC, McLaren continued to shape the fight promotion landscape by launching several ventures, including Iron Ring and Combate Global in 2011.

In 2022, McLaren took to social media to ask fans for suggestions on who should be the next English-language MMA commentator for his show, Combate Global, which primarily targets a Hispanic audience. Fans overwhelmingly suggested UFC’s longtime commentator Joe Rogan.

Addressing the fans’ interest, McLaren explained why Rogan wouldn’t be joining Combate Global, even though he would have loved to offer him the job. He stated, “Thanks for the DMS but @joerogan can’t or won’t do it. Yes, I gave him his shot but he’s one of the biggest commentators on the planet. I’m still looking for the right fit. Must know and love MMA. Must be talented and entertaining to watch.”
