The whole world is gearing up for a bloody war as UFC 291 inches closer. Scheduled to take place on 29 July, the event has some of the best fight cards that UFC fans will have seen recently. The main event of the night is a Lightweight bout between Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier.

The two had met in the cage for the first time back in 2018 at UFC on Fox 29, where Dustin Poirier emerged victorious. The UFC has undergone major changes since then and so have the fighters. To add to that, this will not be just another UFC title fight because this time, the winner will walk away with the ‘iconic’ BMF title belt.

The BMF belt is an iconic belt even though it technically isn’t a championship belt. However, one thing is for certain – both Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier are gonna leave it all in the Octagon on 29 July.

In a recent interview with TMZSports, Justin Gaethje was asked what he thought of fighting for the BMF title. He also mentioned Gaethje discarding the Interim title after a win over Tony Ferguson, because he wanted the Lightweight title that then belonged to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Yeah, I mean… I think, you know, it’s completely separate from the actual championship. I think it’s… you know, really iconic… you know? There’s only been two guys in the world that have ever fought for it. Now we’ll be the two out of four guys now.”, said Gaethje.

Further explaining the importance of the iconic BMF belt and winning the fight against Dustin Poirier, Gaethje further added, “And I think its… it does great things for the legacy that’s ultimately what we’re here to build – its the legacy, make money… uh… that’s there and you know, it kind of pulls us into the championship talk, so… it’s perfect.“.

The Legacy of the BMF Belt –  The Journey to its second fight

The first fight for the BMF title was fought between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, back in 2019. The fight quickly turned into a war that Masvidal ultimately won. Nate Diaz was bloodied up too bad and the doctor had to intervene and call the fight off. To make the moment even more legendary, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson wrapped the BMF belt around Masvidal’s waist.

Cut to 2023, two of the best UFC lightweights, Justin Gaethje and Dustin Poirier, are fighting for the BMF belt, and this time, Masvidal is rumored to be the one to wrap the belt around the waist of the winner.

A few months back, Gaethje’s take on the BMF title fight was completely different from his views about the title right now. He even proceeded to call it ‘stupid’ at a point. However, his mind seems to have changed. But for what reason?
