Everyone knew that Jon Jones would retain his heavyweight belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 303. The only question that remained unanswered was whether ‘Bones’ would be ready to accept a fight against Tom Aspinall next. Needless to say, a fight between the ‘Honey Badger’ and Jones is something that the entire MMA fanbase has been anticipating. Even though it all lies in Dana White and Hunter Campbell’s control, talks about the matchup have already engulfed the fighting community. And now, Israel Adesanya has come forth with his opinion about it.
As with every fight card, the former 2-time middleweight champion took to his YouTube channel ‘FREESTYLEBENDER’, to react to the UFC 309 bouts. Needless to say, he was pretty impressed with Jones’ performance in the main event. After the fight when ‘Bones’ danced to celebrate his victory, Adesanya was visibly amused. He said, “He did the Trump dance. He did it as he does. Yeah, the main card didn’t really, you know, [playout] like I expected. But great main event, great opener.” Weighing in on Stipe Miocic’s retirement, ‘Izzy’ believed that he “went out on top.”, branding him as one of the greatest heavyweights ever. At the end of the FREESTYLEBENDER video, one of Adesanya’s teammates asked him about the matchup between Aspinall and Jones.
‘The Last Stylebender’ seemed quite optimistic regarding the potential Jones-Aspinall fight and believed that Dana White and Hunter Campbell would figure it out. He went on, “I think it’ll happen. If Jones isn’t retiring, I think he’ll figure it out. They’ll figure it out! Talk to Hunter, Talk to Dana, sit down. You know what I’m saying, [have a] couple of brewskis, you know, sit down in the wall room. They’ll hash it out. They’ll figure it out.”

Apart from his reactions to the main event, Israel Adesanya thoroughly enjoyed himself watching the rematch between Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira. The former middleweight champion exclaimed with laughter when ‘Iron’ slammed ‘du Bronx’ when the latter had his back, twice no less.

On the other hand, Jon Jones retracted his retirement claims in his post-fight speech with Joe Rogan. While previously dropping a few names but Tom Aspinall, ‘Bones’ didn’t really reveal the name of his next opponent in his post-fight speech, keeping the fans intrigued.

Right after his 19th straight victory, Jones told Joe Rogan that he would not retire. Jones said, “I have some conversations to have with Dana and Hunter, and we have some negotiating to do. And if everything goes right, maybe we’ll give you guys what you want to see.” What fight fans want to see is for him to put his undisputed title on the line against the interim champion Tom Aspinall.
When the UFC color commentator asked him if his next opponent was Alex Pereira or the ‘Honey Badger’, ‘Bones’ simply averted this question, claiming that the fight fans would get to know about it soon enough. Dana White, on more occasions than one, has expressed his unwillingness to make the Bones-Pereira fight happen. In his mind, the clash between Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall has the potential to be ‘the greatest heavyweight fight in MMA history’.

Even though the UFC head honcho promised the fight fans that the winner of Jones vs. Miocic would fight the interim heavyweight champ, ‘Bones’ was simply against it. In a conversation with Adin Ross, the heavyweight champion claimed the only way he would fight Tom Aspinall was if White and Campbell happened to change his mind about it. Nevertheless, Adesanya, along with many others believes that the UFC CEO can work its magic and treat the fight fans to the clash they’ve long been asking for.
