Athletes competing at the highest level always risk injuries. But this seems to be a common problem, according to the doctor.
Israel Adesanya explained his weak footwork during the later rounds
Israel Adesanya had one of the most exciting fights in his career at UFC 281. The Stylebender put up a confident display against his rival for 4 rounds. Alex Pereira displayed tremendous patience and stamina to endure against the former middleweight champion.
But it all went south in the 5th round when Pereira capitalized on his opportunity and knocked Adesanya out.
In an interview after the match, Adesanya revealed “He hit my peroneal nerve so that’s why my footwork wasn’t as sharp as I wanted it to be so I was trying to find ways to get off the fence but my left foot kept on dragging…”
“that’s why I tripped that one time as well…it is what it is but I’m still here. I’m not leaving,” said the confident athlete.

The 33-year-old fighter blamed a peroneal nerve injury on his leg to be the main reason to give his opponent an advantage. Something similar happened to UFC Legend Conor McGregor when he suffered a horrific leg injury against Dustin Poirier.
The Peroneal Nerve: Conor McGregor at UFC 264
The Notorious’ right leg was damaged slowly during UFC 264. Each kick to the leg caused a great deal of discomfort to the common peroneal nerve, according to sports injury expert Brian Stutterer MD.

The doctor said, “A kick in this area is specifically targeting the common fibular nerve, or common peroneal nerve…” “This is where these UFC fighters are trying to strike, to have these effective calf kicks,”
The injury expert added that “ It’s going to cause some of the nerves to shut off, it’s going to cause some temporary damage to them, basically ending with this dead-feeling lower leg.” This explains Israel Adesanya’s inability to do much with his feet, later in the fight.
