In fresh updates related to UFC 284, fans were apparently saved from a piece of disastrous news related to tomorrow’s event as per Michael Bisping. In a surprising claim, the former UFC champ, now a member of the broadcast team, disclosed that Lightweight champ Islam Makhachev had a few struggles during his weight-cut process. Fortunately, both Makhachev and challenger Alexander Volkanovski hit the scales at 155 and 154.5 pounds respectively and the fight goes on safely as scheduled.
Despite this update, Bisping‘s revelation does set the ball rolling on performance-related questions. While the lightweight champ is cutting down a considerable amount of size, Volkanovski, on the other hand, is fighting a weight class above his regular division at 145 lbs. This, some feel, might just give the Australian a slight advantage when the two finally come face to face.

Bisping too posed a similar question on his YouTube channel. In a pinned comment on his latest video, the UFC commentator wondered if the difference in weight cuts would play a role in the fight itself.
Michael Bisping discloses Islam Makhachev struggled to make weight ahead of the weigh-ins
As per ‘The Count’, the broadcast team during the live weigh-in show had received updates about Makhachev‘s issues during his weight cut. The Englishman did not go too much into detail. He, however, did mention that they were asked to stay ready in case the defending champ missed weight. Eventually, to everyone’s respite, the 31-year-old was able to successfully hit the required mark and officially confirm the main event.
Interestingly, fans on social media also noted that the Dagestani looked drained in comparison to a hydrated and much livelier Volkanovski. Although that might be the case, that is pretty much how every weight cuts go. But the question here that begs an answer is; how much of an influence will it have on the fighters come fight night? Bisping too posed the same question to fans on his YouTube channel.
“We got word during the live weigh-in show that Islam was really struggling and there was a chance he missed weight. That didn’t happen and the huge fight is on! But what does this mean? Volk fans will hope it means Islam may be weigh-drained, but Islam fans are going to hope it means Islam will be MASSIVE come fight time. What do you think?” read the pinned comment on his video.
For fans, this is quite a compelling question. However, it’s something that can only be speculated since it can be answered by only the fighters on the coming fight night.
UFC 284 main event to go ahead after both fighters make weight
Despite news of a difficult weight cut, both fighters have successfully hit their marks making the much-awaited main event official. While Makhachev steps inside the cage for his first title defense, Volkanovski will be aiming to make history in front of a home crowd by claiming a second world title.

Although it is definitely an uphill task for the Australian, the consequences of the weight cut as pointed out by Bisping are certainly something to watch out for. Some would be of the opinion that a drained Makhachev against a hydrated Volkanovski might just help the Australian inside the cage.

Ultimately, discussions on the weight cut and its effect during the fight are merely speculations. While no doubt an easy cut for Volkanovski might give him a confidence boost heading into the cage; it certainly doesn’t guarantee a victory. Especially when the opponent is Islam Makhachev.
