UFC welterweight champ, Leon ‘Rocky’ Edwards had announced that he was in talks to defend his welterweight strap at the highly anticipated historic PPV event, UFC 300. Though an opponent is yet to be announced, the most likely candidate would be the no. 2 ranked UFC welterweight, Belal Muhammad. However, Dana White and the UFC seem to be in quite a pickle as the matchup doesn’t seem to be gaining enough hype behind it to feature in the main event of UFC 300.

Given how stacked the announced fights for UFC 300 have been, it doesn’t leave room for a fight against Muhammad and Edwards to feature as the main event, despite the two currently being two of the best welterweights in the world. But UFC legend, Chael Sonnen believes that the addition of Islam Makhachev could save the fight.

In a recent YouTube video on Sonnen’s channel, the UFC legend called MMA journalist, Ariel Helwani to discuss how the welterweight title fits into the UFC 300 picture. In the video, Sonnen named a fighter who would be interested in the welterweight championship other than Belal Muhammad. He stated, “There’s one guy that’s called them out and that one guy is Islam and he even made his argument saying, ‘Man, I did this for you guys. I did the ’45-pounder. Let me now be that guy.’”

However, Helwani responded to the suggestion, claiming that it wouldn’t be possible for Islam Makhachev to fight at UFC 300, given that the event would take place right after Ramadan. However, Muhammad in an interview claimed that he would be willing to fight for the welterweight strap, but the UFC legend still believes that there’s a chance for the matchup to take place.

Sonnen agrees to leave the matchup between Makhachev vs. Edwards alone because of Ramadan. However, he told Ariel, “We have people with the same belief pattern that are going to fight they’re in Ontario right now and they got a fight tomorrow. So I mean, I don’t know how married to that we are but fair enough. I’ll walk away from it.”

Sonnen isn’t wrong in believing that Makhachev vs. Edwards would be a proper headliner for the UFC 300 card. However, the possibility of that matchup being made is pretty slim, especially with Makhachev laying out his plans for the year.

UFC lightweight champion’s plans for upcoming fights

The UFC lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev has reportedly suffered an injury that would leave him unable to compete against Edwards for the welterweight strap at UFC 300. However, that being the case, Makhachev has taken to Twitter (X) to lay out his plans for his future fights.

In the tweet that Makhachev posted, he wrote, “June 8 UFC PPV vs Gaetje, November UFC MSG vs Olivera/Arman, February 2025 vs Anybody Inshallah,” showing that he would be trying to clear out his division first before trying to take the welterweight strap.
