Islam Makhachev is assigned to fight Dustin Poirier in UFC 302 and the anticipation for the fight is quite palpable. The UFC LW champion is ready to combat his opponent and is training hard with Khabib Nurmagomedov while hoping to continue the retired Hall of Famer’s legacy. In a recent Instagram story, the former lightweight champion and coach for Makhachev gave a message to his star pupil ahead of his battle with Poirier. He shared a picture of Makhachev and wrote, “@islam_makhachev, The best just do it.” Nurmagomedov has not left a single stone unturned to train his champ to become the best in the game. Despite taking retirement from MMA in all forms a few years back, Khabib is returning to the 32-year-old’s corner for UFC 302 and Islam Makhachev is quite excited about the same.
Even though both the Dagestani fighters are confident about their approach to the guillotine choke and the overall fight, Nurmagomedov gave caution to the current champion and shared a warning as well with the Dagestani camp about Poirier. He warned his camp not to underestimate ‘The Diamond’ since the two fought each other at UFC 242, where the former won via submission in the third round.

‘The Eagle’ might have signed off from other aspects of MMA, but he is still coaching his camp and has one sole purpose of making them win. Makhachev continues to reign in the 155-pound category and Nurmagomedov has decided to stay in his corner during the fight to support him and help him in every possible way.

In a video uploaded on his YouTube channel, the 35-year-old said, “Historic fights are ahead and in the next one and a half, two, three months, I would rather be nearby [Makhachev] than later regret and think, ‘If I had been there, it would have been different.” He might not have been at Makhachev’s corner for two years, but he was in contact with the fighter through phone calls and video calls so that he could guide him properly.
The UFC 302 fight is going to cement Makhachev’s name in the lightweight category if he wins. Will ‘The Eagle’s’ training and motivation help the fighter win this? Share your thoughts in the comments.
