Islam Makhachev managed to retain his lightweight belt at UFC 302 after making Dustin Poirier submit in round five of the intense matchup. However, the battle did take its toll on the fighter, as it was revealed that he had suffered a series of injuries that would keep the Dagestan-born out of the Octagon for quite a long time.
Fans were left worried when it was revealed that Makhachev would have to go under the knife to fix a tendon injury he suffered in one hand, something that might lead the lightweight to vacate his championship belt. However, Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez, has now come up with a major update on his health.
In a recent interview with Submission Radio, Coach Mendez revealed that Makhachev will not have to go through surgery. While he has hurt his tendon, the coach confirmed that surgery will not be needed and that just resting would allow the body to heal itself. He said, “I don’t know how he’s looking, I do know what was told. It was a no surgery needed, just need rest in his tendon.”

However, he hasn’t revealed when the lightweight champion could mark his return. The conversation is yet to happen with the Dagestani star in regards to his health pertaining to sparring sessions. “I haven’t spoken to them [Makhachev] in regards as to when he is going to start training. So, right now… I don’t really have any answer that would be correct other than no surgery. That, I do know.”

According to Islam Makhachev, his next challenger would be none other than Arman Tsarukyan. The lightweight champion stated that the fight between the two has been in mind for a long time. He also revealed that it has been scheduled for early next year. However, Michael Chandler would like to disagree.
According to Iron, the winner of the fight between him and Charles Oliveria at UFC 309 would be Makhachev’s next challenger. While Oliveira holds the second spot in the rankings, it seems tough to imagine Chandler as the next in line. The former challenger for a fight against Conor McGregor is sixth in the rankings. Well, it seems like the challenger position is still up for grabs. Till then, Makhachev has a lot of time in hand to get a full rest. What do you think? Whom will he fight next?
