Despite massive demands for a rematch between Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev, UFC president Dana White recently hinted that fans might just have to wait a bit longer for the two to clash again following their memorable fight at UFC 284. Although this news definitely came as a shocker, White’s assessment that both the champions needed to handle their divisional duties does appear to be a legit reason for the fight to be kept on hold.

Agreeing with this verdict, former UFC fighter Chael Sonnen voiced his opinion on the subject as well. The 45-year-old, while speaking on his YouTube channel, took a look at the featherweight and lightweight contenders and made an interesting note regarding the top-ranked fighters. Sonnen, staying true to his unique approach to analysis, compared the UFC president to a ‘tired parent’ who just wanted his ‘bratty’ kids to go away for some time.
Chael Sonnen speculates Islam Makhachev’s uncertain future
Sonnen had to take a long look at the current lightweight landscape with the likes of Beneil Dariush and Charles Oliveira facing each other in a title eliminator and questioned whether Makhachev, despite putting up a show at UFC 284, would be without a fight.
“What do we do with Islam? It would appear that Beniel Dariush is a really good answer. The problem is Beniel Dariush is scheduled to take on Charles Oliveira. So are we gonna just wait…” He then goes on to add that despite the Russian’s performance he seems to have been left ‘unemployed’,” …he beats the number one guy who had never lost to anyone else before, and his reward for that is he gets put on the unemployment list.” stated Sonnen.
The UFC Hall of Famer brought up the Rafael Fiziev, and Justin Gaethje fight as well. Pointing out that since that bout too was yet to happen, he stated that Makhachev just had one option, and that was the Volkanovski fight.
Sonnen explained, “You’ve got it down to one of two guys and you can find it it just happens to be in the future, or you could do Volkanovski versus Islam now.”
Sonnen believes Dana White is just not interested in an Alex Volkanovski and Makhachev rematch right now
Despite confirming that a fight with the Australian seemed like the only option, the former fighter pointed out Dana White’s recent statements and claimed that the president just was not looking to set it up as of now.
“I tell you all I let you have a little fun, maybe we revisit this someday. For now, everybody go home, everybody go back to your division, go tend to your own, bring this conversation up down the line, that’s something you still want to do – that is what they’re being told right now.” stated the 45-year-old.
Ultimately, Sonnen had an interesting angle on why the president was taking this decision. He felt that White just seemed tired of the fighters ‘bratty’ behavior and just wanted to move on to newer pastures. His exact words were: “Now that is nothing more than a tired parent with some bratty kids, doing just enough to get to feed them, just enough to get them to close their mouths. That’s what the entire ‘go do it my way and down the road, we can revisit this’ means.”

Considering that Dana White himself had confirmed this, it does appear that the two champions might have to go back and keep themselves active in their respective divisions before the UFC sets up the fight again.
