The kind of run Islam Makhachev is on right now in the UFC does make a case for him to be the boogeyman of the lightweight division. The Dagestan native is on an unbeaten 14-fight winning streak and has a chance to surpass his mentor to get into the best 155’er conversation at UFC 311. However, former lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez seems to believe that Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s protege could be up for a rude awakening this weekend.
During a recent appearance on the ‘Believe You Me’ podcast, Alvarez joined Michael Bisping and Paul Felder to talk about his upcoming BKFC KnuckleMania 5 headlining clash against Jeremy Stephens. Thereafter, the ex-UFC champ shared his thoughts about Makhachev’s upcoming fight, and while he seemed impressed with the run his UFC run as the champion, he believes that it’s going to take a wrestler to beat him and Arman Tsarukyan is the perfect candidate for that.
“The state of the division’s been great. I mean, Islam’s pretty much the reigning champ… It seems like a lot of divisions, the most dominant wrestler, the guy who has the distinct grappling advantages running the division right now,” Eddie Alvarez stated. “The best guy to put in front of him [Makhachev] to give him the most trouble, to stop that takedown and maybe, take him into a little bit deeper waters is Arman right now.”

Alvarez then pointed out how Dustin Poirier defied expectations to give Makhachev a pretty good run for his money at UFC 302. With that in mind, the 41-year-old veteran is expecting the same kind of showdown when Arman Tsarukyan steps up at the Intuit Dome. “I love the matchup. I hope it turns into a fight the way that the Dustin Poirier one did… I’d like to see that happen with Arman,” Eddie Alvarez added.

“The technique, I’ve never seen in the UFC, in the highlights, as well. That technique, you’re gonna say, ‘Oh wow, what is that?’ … It’s gonna work if I throw it,” Arman Tsarukyan stated during the recent media day. But does it concern Makhachev, though? Well, the champion doesn’t seem fazed because when he got to know about this secret technique, Makhachev shoved it given how Tsarukyan had promised something special for his UFC 300 fight against Charles Oliveira, but the fight went to a decision. “You shouldn’t believe him,” the Dagestan native stated during the recent media day.
Well, we’ll all get our answers this weekend about how the fight goes, but there’s no question that this fight between Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan is a highly anticipated one. Whom do you see winning at UFC 311? Drop your comments below.
