The debate for the best pound-for-pound fighter has involved two star fighters – Jon Jones and Islam Makhachev. While most people have been citing that the lightweight champion deserves that tag, UF CEO Dana White is hesitant to choose anyone else than ‘Bones’. Recently, when he was asked about that topic during the Contender Series presser, the 55-year-old apparently came unglued.

The biggest deal with Dana White’s claim regarding the P4P debate between Jon Jones and Islam Makhcahev is that the lightweight hasn’t really proved that he owns the No. 1 spot. Why? Well, as many fans discussed this last year, he almost lost to Alexander Volkanovski, a featherweight, in their UFC 284 encounter. That seemingly destroyed any notion that Makhachev could be better than Jones for the UFC CEO.

“Islam, many people believe, lost to the guy who’s in a weight class below him. Is that how pound-for-pound works? Many people, including people in this room,” Dana White stated during the Contender Series presser“He fought a weight class down. Jones Jones fought a weight class up… Jon Jones has always been willing to fight anybody.”

Meanwhile, Dana White would continue to show his support for Jon Jones when the reporters asked him about his inactivity. The UFC CEO would go as to defend the heavyweight champion while doubling down that ‘Bones’ is indeed returning later this year.

Dana White still snubs Islam Makhachev for Jon Jones

When a reporter mentioned that Jon Jones isn’t as active as some of the other fighters, Dana White said, “He was active. He blew his f—ing shoulder out in training, and then had to recover and is still coming back. Jon Jones is active.” The most common complaint regarding Jones is the fact that he’s had only one fight in over four years, and people don’t seem to know when he’ll make his impending return. To that statement, White revealed that most people already know that Madison Square Garden is where the heavyweight champion will make his return.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Dana White playing favorites by defending Jon Jones over Islam Makhachev in the pound-for-pound debate?

Have an interesting take?

“This guy [one of the reporters] said he knows he’s [Jones] fighting in f—ing November. Will I announce it? I said, ‘I’ll announce it when the whole card is but everybody knows he’s fighting,” Dana White added while sounding a bit irritated about the P4P debate and totally shooting down any chance that Islam Makhachev deserves the top spot. “It’s f—ing silly and I don’t know what this game is with everybody, but Jon Jones is the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world.” It doesn’t seem like White’s support for Jones would ever diminish in the future.
