Colby Covington is one of the most patriotic Americans to have ever graced the UFC. His speeches often involve praise for the red, white, and blue. Even his chest tattoo reading, ‘We The People’ highlights his love for the nation. And this love has brought him close to the President-elect of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

But do you know about Covington’s political views and dreams? Let’s take a look. And while we’re at it, let’s also talk about his relationship with the POTUS. Let me give you a disclaimer, the welterweight fighter’s political views attracted quite some controversies towards him.

What are Colby Covington’s political beliefs?

Colby Covington has often stood in support of the Republican Party and Donald Trump. He has been spotted donning the red ‘Make America Great Again’ hats in public. On top of that, he visited Trump at the White House during his first tenure as the President of the USA. ‘Chaos’ also stood up for everything Trump has done for the country. Be it trying to bring peace to the Middle East, keeping the borders secure by strengthening the military powers, and even better economy, Covington addressed it all.

‘Chaos’ has a mindset that seems to align with political conservatism. It’s the same kind of belief that Trump holds. The duo’s love for the traditional American values was what brought them close to each other. But things soon began to take a bad turn for the welterweight fighter as he continued supporting the Republican.

According to him, the UFC judges at UFC 296 were biased. Following his loss against Leon Edwards, he said, “They hate me because I support Trump. If it’s in a judging position, in a fight or any type of athletic sporting event, they’re going to stack the deck against us, so it’s a sad time in our country, but we the people need to rise up, and we can’t let this keep us down.”

Does Covington's political stance make him a hero or a villain in the UFC world?

But how exactly are Covington and Trump-related? Is it just friendship? Or is there something more to the story?

Colby Covington’s relationship with Donald Trump

Back in December 2023, ‘Chaos’ made an appearance on the PBD Podcast. Therein, he admitted, “I do believe I’m the Donald Trump of the UFC. He’s my biggest role model, he’s my mentor, and he’s someone that I really look up to, so I try and model my career after a lot of things that he’s done.”

He expressed his admiration for the POTUS before facing Edwards. ‘Chaos claimed, “I’ve already been anointed and celebrated as the people’s champion, as America’s champion, as the ‘King of Miami’, and most importantly, as Donald Trump’s favorite fighter.” It was a time when he wanted Trump to put the welterweight belt around his waist if he won against Edwards. Unfortunately, fate had different plans and Covington lost his bout against the former champion. But even after losing, he could not restrain himself from giving a shoutout to Trump, in his post-fight interview,

Covington likes to think of himself as one of Trump’s friends. He was already a fan of the POTUS when Trump decided to give him a call right after his KO victory over Tyron Woodley back in 2020. Needless to say, it was a surreal moment for the welterweight contender. ‘Chaos’ said, “It was my career-defining moment, you know. To have someone I admire so much, who’s a hero to me and my idol. To have me call and celebrate and saying how big of a fan he is of me like dude, you’re my idol, I’m a big fan of you.”

Their friendship began when ‘Chaos’ defeated Rafael dos Anjos to become the interim welterweight champion. He wasted no time to give Trump a visit at the White House. According to sources, the duo spent about 30 minutes talking. Thinking about the relationship between the two, fight fans have often wondered whether the 36-year-old ever wanted a career in politics. As it turns out, Covington indeed has an interest in beginning a career in politics after wrapping up his UFC contract.

Colby Covington plans to enter politics

During his appearance on the PBD Podcast, ‘Chaos’ announced his desire to run for Congress in the upcoming years. He claimed that he’d be the perfect fighter to ever do so. After all, he was a self-made made who came from nothing, but now earned in millions. He said, “So I think that I can do great things for this Republican and Conservative movement because they don’t have the funds and means to do it. I appreciate everything Donald Trump’s done for me, I’m a true believer, I’ll die fighting for that man.”

It was pretty evident that Covington desired to get elected. But his dream? It was to govern a state. He continued, “I do want to get into politics one day because I want to fight for what I believe in. I want to get into Congress, maybe Senate, something like that. Maybe be the governor of Florida. That would be my ultimate dream. It’s to be governor of this state.” No doubt, it would be pretty interesting to see a Republican Covington take the governor’s office.

But first, Covington needs to overturn his 1-fight losing spree against Joaquin Buckley at UFC on ESPN 63. Will he receive support from Trump before his fight on 14th December? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
