The current UFC lightweight champ, Islam Makhachev is on the verge of creating history at UFC 311, with a chance to surpass his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov’s legacy. He was scheduled to take on Arman Tsarukyan in a rematch but in the wake of the Armenian star’s back injury, Brazilian contender Renato Moicano has stepped in as a last-minute replacement.
Most UFC fans know the reigning champion as one of the best students of Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, the father of ‘The Eagle’ Khabib Nurmagomedov. The 33-year-old likes keeping his public speeches limited to his UFC career and fight affairs, but we’ve seen instances when he has talked about his life outside the UFC, so let’s take a deeper dive into his personal life, ahead of his fight this weekend.

Islam Makhachev’s wife and kids
Not much is available about the Dagestani’s personal life, but there are a few reports that talk about some of Makhachev’s personal affairs. Looking at his nature, a large chunk of fans might have thought that they would never get to know about his marital status. However, Makhachev does have a wife but there’s no information available on her identity.
Also, Islam Makhachev recently revealed that he has children as well. He has three kids, one daughter and two sons. “Three [children]… girl [is the eldest and], boy, [and] boy,” Makhachev told Demetrious Johnson on the Mightcast. The lightweight champion also talked about the bond he shares with his daughter, who he gave a shout-out after his title win at UFC 280.
“Last couple [of] months, I watched the video [of] how my daughter [is] grow[ing] up without me. But after [a] couple [of] days, I’m gonna be home,” Islam Makhachev stated. Meanwhile, when we take a look at the wedding ceremony of the lightweight champion, it was a pretty grand one, to say the least.

A lot of fans were taken aback when a 2021 video showcased Islam Makhachev at a reception party. It was actually the Dagestan native’s own wedding party. The presence of Makhachev and his bosom friend Khabib Nurmagomedov in gleaming suits also hinted that the occasion was nothing except the 33-year-old’s wedding itself.

For the wedding, Makhachev booked a hotel for thousands of guests, which, of course, included his mentor, and also former UFC fighter Zubaira Tughukov. The bride’s face was covered with a veil adhering to stick Islamic tradition, so we didn’t get any glimpse of Islam Makhachev’s wife. Almost all UFC fans are aware of the fact that the current UFC lightweight champ hails from the Republic of Dagestan, Russia. However, the place of his birth used to be called Dagestan ASSR, Soviet Union when he was born. Makhachev was born in the Makhachkala region of Dagestan, which is the largest city in the country. But Islam doesn’t belong to the city. His native village, Burshi, lies in the mountainous outskirts of Makhachkala city.

The details about Islam Makhachev’s family are limited. His mother’s and his father’s identities haven’t been revealed, but we do know that his mother ran a small cafe while the patriarch of the family was a driver and a small-time farmer. Besides them, the UFC champion also has a brother named Kurbanismail, who significantly contributed to his MMA journey.
Makhachev has often been vocal about his life growing up. He has mentioned that he and his friends often got into fights with the Makhachkala city boys during their interactions. He also stated how sustaining life in those mountains required immense “physical labor” every day. The Dagestani, proudly stated, “Hard Work is in our DNA”. But his life found a greater purpose when he met his best friend, Khabib, during his childhood years.
