Leon Edwards showcased a champion’s performance at UFC 296. He dominated Colby Covington, who returned to fight after over a year and a half and secured a unanimous decision win. However, that was not the real talking point during that fight week. Rather, it was a distasteful comment from Covington about Edwards’s father that drew the ire of MMA fans worldwide.

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier discussed the aforementioned incident with former UFC fighter Ben Askren. He examined Leon Edwards’ history and noticed a change in him after Covington spoke about the champion’s father’s death. What does ‘DC’ have to say about this?

‘DC’, like many other MMA personalities, has given his verdict on the comments Colby Covington made about Leon Edwards’s father. While he did not say if it was right or wrong, he did mention that ‘Rocky’s team was ready to do a number on ‘Chaos’. They did not like what Covington said.

“He [Covington] says something about Leon Edwards’s father at the press conference and Leon, immediately, everything about him changed… Leon’s whole team was trying to kill Colby,” said Daniel Cormier. He then talked about something he found in ‘Rocky’s past on YouTube.

The Hall of Famer stated that the video he found was about Leon Edwards having ties with some suspicious people in his early years. Daniel Cormier found a narrative that claimed the UFC was not letting Leon Edwards be who he is as an individual.

“If you go to YouTube, there is a video of Leon Edwards’s past and it was like the gangster that the UFC is trying to hide. Leon Edwards had some ties back where he’s from growing up,” Cormier added. That led to him providing his own analysis of how Colby Covington followed through after he was hit by a bottle during the press conference.

As per reports available, the UFC welterweight champion escaped a life of crime and turned around his situation. He was only 13 when his father was killed, and this accelerated his downward spiral. He and his friends got into fights, robberies, and drugs. He was 17 when he started training in MMA and turned his life around.

‘DC’ on Covington’s reaction after remarks about Edwards’s dad

Daniel Cormier claimed to have witnessed a change in Colby Covington’s demeanor after Leon Edwards charged at him with rage after he made the remarks about his father. He said, “That part of Leon Edwards came out and Colby Covington did not react well to it.”

In addition to that, Daniel Cormier also noticed what Colby Covington said during the face-off. He seemed to have taken a step back after stooping so low. Covington said something to Leon Edwards, but the UFC removed it from the ‘Embedded Blog Series’. “At the face-off, you could see him almost mouthing… they [UFC] subtitled what he was saying [in the Embedded Vlog series], they removed it,” Daniel Cormier added.

Colby Covington seemingly broke character during the presser after messing up with his words. Many feel he tends to go too far when dishing out verbiage. But many have claimed that the former interim champion is a whole different guy when he’s not in character.

However, Leon Edwards did not proceed to continue beefing about it despite getting emotional thinking about his father. Nevertheless, Covington remained unapologetic about those remarks, even after losing the fight.
