Rizvan Magomedov on Khabib Nurmagomedov retiring

Although the news of Nurmagomedov retiring was in itself surprising, fans still expected him to corner Islam Makhachev as he takes on Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 284. The current Lightweight champion has been a long-time friend of Nurmagomedov and his presence would have surely benefitted him.

In an interview with Match TV, a Russian outlet, Rizvan Magomedov went into details about Nurmagomedov’s retirement. Magomedov highlighted the busy traveling schedule that left Nurmagomedov away from home for the majority of the year.

“I think he made it clear. It was a balanced decision, which he approached for a long time. No need to look for behind-the-scenes reasons or radical incidents. He just came to this. He retired in 2020 but travels during training camps, during fights. Out of 12 months, 10 he is absent from home, constantly on these trips.” stated Magomedov.

While talking about Nurmagomedov’s children, Rizvan Magomedov also revealed that he won’t be beside Makhachev in Australia.

“He came to such a decision that it would be time to spend time with his family, devote time to children… You come home and do not notice how your children grow up. And, most likely, he will miss this fight, yes,”  were his exact words.
