The investigations into Russia’s so-called state-sponsored use of PEDs have been going on for nearly a decade now. Some shocking revelations regarding malpractices during the Olympic games have resulted in Russia and Russian teams being banned from competing. Recently, UFC commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan delved into the controversy with his JRE guest.

Rogan covers all sorts of topics in his podcasts. With guests from all walks of life, no episode stays the same. So it came as no surprise that his recent episode with UFC middleweight prospect Bo Nickal touched on the subject of PEDs and other drugs. They started the episode off with the Russian controversy at the Olympics. Here’s what they had to say.

The doping scandal in question kicked off in 2014 after Russia bagged a surprising 33 medals in February at the Sochi Winter Olympics, almost twice their previous haul from 2010 in Vancouver. In December of the same year, two high-ranking officials of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency alleged a state-sponsored doping program for Russian athletes.

The investigation that has since ensued has uncovered practices such as switching sample bottles collected from Russian athletes at the Olympic Games. Joe Rogan revealed the tactics that the Russians were implementing to get through the testing process. The BJJ black belt stated, “That was so insane that they had a hole in the wall where they were handing the dirty urine and getting back clean urine and then submitting that, and if it wasn’t for microanalysis of the jars….”

“The Soviets had it figured out. It wasn’t the Soviets. The Russians had figured out some way to open up these unopenable jars. Yeah, it scratched little places,” said Rogan, revealing how the Russians managed to bypass the initial drug testing.

Though the authorities stripped as many as 48 medals from Russia later, it begs us to question how they conduct drug tests on their athletes. The UFC, on the other hand, had one of the most strict drug testing agencies, which a lot of UFC fighters had problems with. This even included the likes of retired UFC welterweight Jorge Masvidal.

USADA was the drug testing agency that was in partnership with the UFC for over a decade. They have been known for being really strict and sometimes unreasonable when it comes to drug testing. In the JRE MMA show #137, Jorge Masvidal revealed how much of a nuisance USADA had been in his fight camps.

“They came on a Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday between 5:15 and like 6:30 in my f**king home. What about my sleep bro?” Masvidal expressed his pure annoyance with how the USADA failed to respect fighters’ timing and schedule.
