Joe Rogan’s podcast often leads to a healthy debate and discussion amongst the fandom. However, the latest episode featuring comedian Tom Segura has set off a tidal wave of backlash! The JRE (Joe Rogan Experience) episode no. 2202 featured the stand-up comedian and co-host of ‘Your Mom’s House Podcast’. But the comment section was filled with fans taking jabs at Segura for some questionable statements he’s made in the past.

If you’re wondering what caused the avalanche of disapproval, it was because of a series of posts Segura had made on X a year back. What did he say? In a now-deleted post, Segura had stated, “The lowest level poors get upset as they’ve been trained to do when you point out their ‘happy to do what I’m told’ servant mentality. They don’t value time because their time is worthless.” The situation escalated further as enthusiasts took exception to that.

One fan had responded by pointing out Segura’s “callousness to humanity” and that the comedian had “lost touch” with his audience. Segura, undeterred, responded by labeling the user as “Poor” with a finger-pointing emoji. Evidently, the enthusiasts have not yet forgotten his controversial take on that occasion. So as the latest episode of the podcast went live, they ripped the ‘Two Bears One Cave’ podcast co-host with sarcastic taunts. But while recalling the year-old incident, don’t you find some intriguing similarities between Rogan and Segura?

Take a look back to 2022. You might feel like Rogan shares a common dislike with Tom Segura for the not-so-well-to-do people of the society. The same JRE podcast was in the eye of a storm. And that time it was Rogan himself who had made controversial remarks about the homeless people of Los Angeles. Guess who was the one he was sitting with on that occasion?

It is none other than Tom Segura! In the episode that was aired on July 14, 2022, Segura and Rogan, smoking cigars, moved on to talk about homelessness in Los Angeles (The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (Lahsa) report in June 2024 revealed that the county has an estimated 75,312 homeless people).

In a widely slammed conversation, Rogan began by talking about how homeless people’s possessions were scattered everywhere in Los Angeles. Segura said, “When you see stuff like that on the streets, at least in Los Angeles or California, that’s protected property. Like by law. That’s that’s a person’s property by law.”

“Oh, a homeless person’s property is protected?” Rogan exclaimed. As Segura replied: “Absolutely. If you were to try to move that or take that,” Rogan finished his sentence by adding, “You’d get arrested. Hilarious.” He then went on to add jokingly, “But they wouldn’t arrest you if you shot somebody. Maybe you should just go shoot the homeless people.” Rogan had Segura to back him as the latter said, “I like your ideas.”

This could not have gone unnoticed, as many fans had branded it “sickening” and “disgusting”. Not only them, but Rogan also drew criticism from the advocates of the homeless people, as well. Theo Henderson, an unhoused advocate who created the podcast ‘We the Unhoused’, said the comments could cause violence directed at people without homes. “It’s repulsive,” Theo had said.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Tom Segura's humor too edgy for today's audience, or are people just too sensitive?

Have an interesting take?

Andy Bales, the then-president and CEO of the downtown L.A. homeless shelter Union Rescue Mission, while expressing disappointment, had even asked Rogan to have a firsthand understanding of the issue. “I would invite Joe to come to Union Rescue Mission to see, not only our work, but see what’s happening on the streets and who these people are who he’s talking about,” he had said. As Rogan and Segura joined each other for one more episode, the netizens could not stop digging up their comments about the poor people. Let’s take a look.

Fans have not forgotten Tom Segura’s take on poverty

It seems people who once admired Tom Segura for his comedy were quick to share their frustrations online. The comedian and podcaster has made a stunning physical transformation in the past few years, losing a considerable amount of weight. But did it change his personality? That’s what the fans seem to think as they claimed that his “spirit” was more empathetic and “rich” before calling out how fame and money have seemingly changed Segura’s outlook.

They also brought up his wife and co-host of the ‘Your Mom’s House’ podcast, Christina Pazsitzky’s recent health issues as she had revealed on a July 31 episode of YMH that, “I have very, very early stage breast cancer… It’s highly treatable, I’m gonna be fine.” Referring to that, one commented, “Tom should be home taking care of his wife. That’s what fat Tom would’ve done. Fat Tom might’ve been poor but his spirit was rich.”

The jabs about Segura being ‘rich’ were a constant theme throughout the comments, as some even claimed that he’s not even sitting on a chair to do the podcast. Why? Because his wallet is seemingly thick enough to act as a cushion! “Tom’s not sitting in a chair. He’s sitting on the floor with his wallet in his back pocket,” a user joked. Notably, the so-called ‘targeting’ of the poor people by Segura has not happened only once.

Last year, Tom and his wife Christina Pazsitzky were heavily criticized as they said on their podcast that washcloths are used by poor people. Recalling all these one user vented disappointment: “Why did we ever like this guy? I spent over a decade consuming his podcast and specials. I’m so disappointed in myself.” Others didn’t hold back in their sarcasm as they jokingly apologized to Joe Rogan that they were financially not worthy of witnessing Tom Segura’s “presence” on the JRE.

“I’m sorry Joe, but i can’t watch this podcast because I’m too poor to be graced by the presence of someone as great as tom segura,” one commented. The ‘roast’ didn’t stop there as one fan claimed that they were so “poor” that they couldn’t even afford a device to leave a comment on the video! “Commenting from a stranger’s laptop inside of a starbucks. Because im poor,” they hilariously wrote.

Once beloved for his sharp wit and relatable humor, Tom Segura now faces a wave of criticism that accuses him of being out of step with the very people who helped build his career. The sarcastic comments about his wealth and lifestyle highlight how deeply the fans feel his shift in attitude. For now, Segura seems to have alienated a significant portion of his audience. But the questions linger. Did Segura go too far, or are the fans overreacting? Let us know your thoughts on the situation in the comments below!
