UFC star Conor McGregor once admitted in 2015 how his then-newly-founded fame messed up his head ahead of his arguably greatest fight against Jose Aldo at UFC 194. The Irishman had just clinched the interim gold and was gearing up to become the undisputed champion. To mentally prepare for the title fight, he returned to Ireland. However, wherever he went, a long queue of fans followed him.

The Irish fighter couldn’t breathe easy as the media outlets and fans hotly pursued him. Further, his involvement in commercial events increased, putting him in a tight corner. While he made himself available to the fans and didn’t turn anyone down, he still felt upset about how few events had transpired. Entrapped in the vicious haze of fame, ‘Notorious’ believed he had become “a piece of meat.”

All the fame wreaked havoc inside the 34-year-old fighter’s head. He also thought he needed to say no sometimes. But, either way, he was doomed to face criticism and thus found himself in an unpleasant state.

The Dubin-born, told the Irish Examiner, “So it’s all messing with my head a bit. That’s why I feel I just need to drift away for a while. I need to say no sometimes. But then you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I’m in a weird place in my head now.”

However, overwhelmed with his popularity, he also had a place to escape from the camera and everyday stress.

McGregor found solace in SBG Ireland

‘Mystic Mac’, who was on the cusp of becoming the UFC champion, turned to his gym as a getaway. McGregor, who had spent hundreds of hours tumbling on the mat under the SBG Ireland roof, believed he lived in the moment whenever he trained there.

Thus, he stated, “But when I come here [SBG Ireland gym] the stresses of everyday life all go away. Once you’re in here and someone is trying to wrap around your throat or punch you in the face, you’re living in that moment. You’re not anywhere else. That is why I love this place,” he added later on.

Notably, Conor McGregor defeated Jose Aldo at UFC 194 in December 2015 and become the featherweight champion. Later on, he also snatched the lightweight gold from Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 and became the first fighter to hold two simultaneous titles.
