Is Colby Covington crossing the line with his trash talk, or is it all fair in the fight game?

The beef between Colby Covington and Dustin Poirier is on the rise with the fighting community expecting a showdown between the two anytime soon. Despite being in two separate weight categories, the duo has raised all hell against each other. You’ll be surprised to know that Poirier and Covington have been engaged in a cold war for a couple of years now, with both of them promising to fight the other.

Even Chael Sonnen negated Poirier’s apparent retirement, claiming that a fight with ‘Chaos’ was yet to be done. However, ‘Chaos’ doesn’t think that a fight between him and Poirier will ever materialize.

On the 30th of July, Covington made an appearance on the ‘Submission Radio’. With the heat surrounding him and ‘Diamond’, a conversation about the possibility of their matchup was unavoidable. But when the podcast host directed the question towards ‘Chaos’, the welterweight fighter seemed to believe that it was a bout that would never happen and went on to bash Poirier.

Covington said, “I think it’s a fight that never materializes because deep down inside he knows I’m his daddy. He knows that I’ve exposed all his shi**y tactics, and just the piece of s*** person that he is. So, of course, I would love that fight. It’s the biggest and best fight that we can do in this division. I mean, it’s the biggest fight that he can get, you know.”

‘Chaos’ claimed that the Lafayette resident was done with the lightweight division. He simply had no fights left in the 155-pound category. On top of that, Covington also pointed out the difficulties Poirier faced to make weight. He continued, “He’s cutting all these chromosomes, he’s cutting so- much weight to get to 155. He should come and fight in a real, a real man’s weight class. Why is he fighting a little kid’s weight class? So, you know, he’s all talk! The fans now know that he’s full of s***. He doesn’t talk the talk and walk the walk!”

Poirier’s last battle in the LW division was against Islam Makhachev for the lightweight championship belt. Unfortunately for ‘Diamond’, the bout ended with the Dagestani clinching victory via a D’arce choke. That was the moment when Poirier lost his last chance to win the championship belt and decided to take retirement. Howbeit, ‘The American Gangster’ seemed to have different thoughts.

Chael Sonnen believes in the Poirier vs. Covington matchup

The former UFC contender had a similar belief with Covington when it came to Poirier walking out of the LW division. However, ‘The Bad Guy’ did not think that a fight with ‘Chaos’ was out of the question. After all, ‘Diamond’ even declared that he wasn’t completely sure if the fight at UFC 302 was his last fight. It all hinted at a possible matchup at the welterweight division.

Sonnen opined, “I’m bringing you that piece of news because Dustin is very unlikely to call somebody out. But that somebody is out there. He is at 170 pounds. His name is Colby Covington. That’s the fight, that’s the one that’s waiting. That’s a mega and massive event. And there’ll be others that fit that bill. But Dustin who is not comfortable at calling for those fights might need somebody else to suggest it. But no! He’s not done with fighting. He’s just done with the lightweight division.”
