There are some fighters in UFC history who may not have won championships but certainly have won fans’ hearts. In recent times, fighters such as Nate Diaz, Derrick Lewis, and Jorge Masvidal fit the bill. But, in the earlier days of the UFC, one name stands out above all else- Chael Sonnen.
With his excellent mic skills and rhymes a la Muhammad Ali, his undeniable charisma and a take-no-prisoners approach to trash talking, no one cuts a promo like ‘Uncle Chael’. His press conference against Tito Ortiz, interviews before rematch with Anderson Silva and post-match call-outs are some of the funniest and most hilarious moments in UFC history, well worth a watch (and rewatches) even today. And, it seems ‘The Bad Guy’ has still got it as he recently showed while answering questions at a UFC event ahead of UFC 292.

A reporter said he felt that the West Lynn native was “tough as nails” and asked Sonnen if he agreed. Sonnen initially feigned humility and said that while he would have agreed with the reporter once. But his perspective had shifted after retiring. But, in another display of his brilliant sense of humor, it turned out that the humility was just a misdirection as the old Chael Sonnen that fans know and love came out.
“Maybe at one time, I would agree with that statement [that I’m tough as nails]. But I do feel like as a fan as soon as I stopped doing the sport… It’s different once you retire and step away. You know what I’m being humble. Yeah, I’m the man. I’ll whip them all; bring them on. 1-on-1, 2-on-1 or 5-on-1 I’ll make ’em all need 9-1-1.”

Chael shifted his tune and told the reporter he was just being humble and that he actually could take on one, two, or even five people at once and have them call for help.

Throwback to Sonnen’s legendary interviews before the Anderson Silva fight
In their first fight, Sonnen, was able to give Anderson Silva, one of the best to ever do it, a tough time for four rounds. In the final round, the Oregonian submitted to a triangle hold. He would later claim that he thought tapping meant he lost only that round and not the whole fight. And since he had won the previous four rounds, he thought he would win the fight. This is why the Oregonian would do all interviews before their rematch with a fake belt, claiming he beat ‘The Spider’, to the amusement of fans and interviewers.

Chael Sonnen may not be the best fighter in UFC history, but influence is undeniable. Conor McGregor, Colby Covington, and most recently Sean Strickland would employ the same tactics as Sonnen to find success in the UFC. What do you think about Chael’s trash-talk skills?
