Former UFC referee turned analyst ‘Big’ John McCarthy recently discussed Jake Paul’s proposed union for UFC fighters on a solo episode of the podcast ‘Weighing In’. Moreover, the podcast delved into various other topics, such as UFC Vegas 76, the highly anticipated showdown between Sean Strickland and Abus Magomedov, and the noteworthy comeback of Cub Swanson to the featherweight division.
McCarthy shared his insights on the fighter mentality and the importance of securing major stars like Conor McGregor to make the union successful. However, ‘The Problem Child’ has already got one UFC legend supporting him in his unionization efforts.

McCarthy emphasized the self-centered nature of fighters, highlighting their focus on personal gain and the next fight. He explained how the union plans could gain traction. And how it would require the involvement of influential fighters who possess some power within the UFC.
“If you have a Conor McGregor, – huge name within the sport – that would have an impact in making the union. If you had a Jon Jones, that would have a huge impact.”, McCarthy said.
Drawing a comparison to unions in other major sports leagues, McCarthy pointed out that the individual nature of fighting presents unique challenges. In team sports, players come together as a collective, whereas fighting remains an individual sport. McCarthy acknowledged the difficulty in overcoming these obstacles, referring to them as “giant boulders” that need to be addressed.
